With his pregame attire for the Los Angeles Lakers‘ clash against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, LeBron James paid homage to the late rapper Takeoff. Following the event, James posted a side-by-side comparison of his appearance with one of Takeoff’s on Instagram and also talked about him in the press conference.
Last week, very early in the morning, word spread that Takeoff, a rapper from the Migos, had been shot and killed. Shots were fired while the 28-year-old Grammy-winning rapper was at a private party at a Houston bowling alley. He was subsequently determined to have died at the scene from two deadly gunshot wounds, one to the head and one to the body. LeBron James of the Lakers commemorated the late rapper by wearing his trademark attire to the game as the entire world paid tribute to the renowned artist.
The 18-time All-Star chose to remember the deceased star with a pregame suit that resembled a famous Takeoff look today before his game against the Cleveland Cavaliers: a funereal black suit and black tie, with a white undershirt, sunglasses, and Takeoff’s trademark chain. At the post game presser, LeBron was asked about Takeoff and therein he stated: “I was listening for so long. I was listening to those guys in my first year with the Heat in 2010…Just fast-forwarding and knowing Takeoff personally and send my condolences to his family.”
LeBron James and the Lakers were no match for the young Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 114-100 on Sunday courtesy to Donovan Mitchell’s 33 points and Darius Garland’s 24 points in their dynamic backcourt’s comeback from injury unavailability. This was the Cavaliers’ eighth straight win as Los Angeles was outscored 56-36 by the Cavaliers in the terrible second half, which ultimately proved to be the difference in the game’s outcome. The Cavaliers went to 8-1 and extended their longest winning streak since 2017 with 16 additional points from Jarrett Allen and 12 from Caris LeVert.
James had 27 points, but he fell to the Cavaliers from his hometown for just the second game in 19 meetings. For the Lakers, who lost their second straight game at home and fell to 2-7, Anthony Davis finished with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, 12 rebounds, four assists, and one blocked shot. Although Russell Westbrook put in another energetic performance as a reserve with 19 points, 10 assists, and seven turnovers, the Lakers were helpless against Mitchell and Garland.

One of the biggest rap groups to come out of Atlanta was Takeoff and The Migos, who also helped popularize many of the current rap trends that are used by musicians all over the world. LeBron chose an attire that was inspired by Takeoff and his signature looks for today’s Lakers vs. Cavaliers match.

It has been a painful few days for everyone who knew Takeoff, but his legacy will live on, and those who adored him—like LeBron James—will always appreciate a rapper who had a major influence on the industry. Before reaching their ideal level, LeBron and the Lakers need to find their tempo once more and challenge the top teams in the Western Conference. Even if the Lakers are showing positive signals all over the squad, if LeBron can’t take them over the top, it will all be for nothing.
