Noah Lyles
recently made headlines for controversial comments regarding the NBA. Lyles is a six-time world champion with a decorated career in track and field. He represents the USA internationally and has won several medals for the nation. In the recent World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Lyles completed a hattrick of golds, winning first place in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m men’s relay events.

While being interviewed post-race, Lyles fired shots at the NBA. He expressed his distaste that NBA champions crown themselves as “World Champions,” even though they play solely in the US. He stated, “World champion of what? The United States? Don’t get me wrong. I love the US at times, but that ain’t the world.” Lyles added, “We have almost every country fighting and thriving and putting on their flags to show that they are represented. There ain’t no flags in the NBA.”

These statements didn’t land well with NBA players, as many started to attack him, from the likes of Kevin Durant to Damian Lillard. Mostly, American-born players took offense to his words and went after Lyles. Durant commented on a post showing the interview, saying, “Somebody help this brother.” Bam Adebayo said ” LOL, is someone going to tell him.” It even reached a point where superstar Canadian rapper Drake joined in on the trolling, saying, “He thought this speech was gonna be so hard in the mirror the night before… now the whole league doesn’t rate you.”

Now, it looks like Lyles’ words have reached the right audience. The NBA recently announced that the Dallas Mavericks will be playing EuroLeague champions Real Madrid on October 10th. Fans are alleging that this move was taken in response to what Lyles had said, trying to prove that the teams in the NBA are the best in the world. Or this might have just been a move by the association to reach a broader fanbase and expose the NBA to international audiences.

Noah Lyles’ statements and the subsequent response by various NBA superstars made this event go viral. Now fans are linking the NBA’s new announcement about the Dallas Mavericks playing Real Madrid to what Lyles had said. Fans allege that his comments regarding the league were the catalyst behind the NBA going after these types of international matches, trying to prove that the league is nothing short of the best in the world. They claim that Lyles’ debate would be put to rest by playing this match.
