Michael Jordan and LeBron James are two NBA legends who are compared endlessly. Their differences are constantly nitpicked by the media in an attempt to find out who’s better. However, amongst all these differences, fans forget that they share a few similarities as well. One of which is their love for playing at the MSG – Madison Square Garden.
LeBron James recently put up an Instagram story in which he claims Madison Square Garden to be his favorite place to play in the world. In 1997, Michael Jordan said something to the SLAM magazine. Jordan said, Yeah, I love it… ’cause the history—everybody knows about basketball in New York City. And this is where you come see the best basketball played. That’s what Madison Square Garden’s always meant to me. And they’re very loyal to their fans, yet they’re very honorable about good basketball.” Both Jordan and Lebron have had their fair share of iconic moments at the MSG.
Perhaps it was these moments he was remembering when he said, “My FAV place to play ball in the whole WORLD!” in reference to Madison Square.
This adoration for Madison Square is understandable. Any fan would love to watch a basketball game, live in the MSG. The stands are often packed with celebrities and the atmosphere is electric. Throughout the years, MSG has hosted a plethora of iconic NBA moments, which is perhaps why it lives on in the minds of players and fans.
What is Michael Jordan’s past with the MSG?
Michael Jordan has been called the King of MSG by some. He has had uncountable dominant performances at the New York Knicks’ home court.
He averaged 32 points per game while playing in the MSG. That is the greatest points per game at a particular venue in NBA history. Jordan had some of his most memorable NBA moments at the MSG as well. These include the infamous Double-Nickel game. The backstory of the game starts when Michael Jordan came back to the NBA after retirement. To some fans, it appeared Jordan had lost his spark. However, when Jordan stepped into the MSG wearing the Number 45, he proved those fans wrong. He proceeded to torch the New York Knicks and finished the game with 55 points.
Jordan and James aren’t the only players to have iconic moments at the MSG. When Stephen Curry broke the all-time NBA record for 3-pointers, he did it in front of a roaring MSG crowd. These stories have understandably immortalized the MSG stadium in the minds of fans worldwide; the hardwood of MSG has been etched into basketball history, never to be removed.
