Florida Governor Ron DeSantis who’s running a presidential campaign for the 2024 USA elections. Recently, exchanged some tough words with the NBA. The league has always tried to avoid politics and be true to its purpose. But unfortunately, that’s just now how things work. And, the most substantial GOP rival of former president Donald Trump, DeSantis, is nowhere near the good books of the league.
The Never Back Down Super PAC, backing up DeSantis, recently received a $50,000 donation from the Orlando Magic team. The Walt Disney World Resort, in a legal and political battle with the Florida Governor, is one of the official sponsors for the team. So the donation has never made great sense to the people around the league.
Also, the many changes made by Ron DeSantis in the state and his policies haven’t settled well with the masses. His controversial laws regarding discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity, and on abortion have always had him under the heat. So the NBA’s Player Association wasn’t happy with the donation and called out the Orlando Magic team for doing so.
The NBA released a statement on the political donation and wrote: “A political contribution from the Orlando Magic is alarming given recent comments and policies of its beneficiary. NBA governors, players, and personnel have the right to express their personal political views, including through donations and statements. However, if contributions are made on behalf of an entire team, using money earned through the labor of its employees, it is incumbent upon the team governors to consider the diverse values and perspectives of staff and players. The Magic’s donation does not represent player support for the recipient.”
The NBPA gave out a reasonable explanation for their disagreement on the political donation made by the Orlando Magic. But the Magic team isn’t riding the same boat and a spokesperson of their said how the donation was made days before Rom DeSantis announced his intent to seek the GOP presidential campaign. The team also mentioned how the gift isn’t a political donation but just support for Florida Business for the prosperity of the City. Even the ownership group which relates to Trump Administration is under fire.
Ron DeSantis though didn’t like the protest NBPA voiced against the donation he received. As clowning them and their statement he even dragged LeBron James into the conversation via his response. In a tweet of his, the Florida Governor wrote: “It appears the NBA took a break from protesting our anthem and bending the knee to Communist China to chirp about my policies.”
DeSantis sent out a smart response by bringing the evergreen controversy of the NBA and its relationship with China to the conversation. He even reflected upon protests against the anthem by some players from the league. Even though that counts as a peaceful protest his tweet displayed it as disrespect towards the nation.
NBA and LeBron James’ controversial relationship with China
NBA and LeBron James have been linked with China for many controversial reasons. Be it business deals, production facilities, or protests in that country. Even promotional tours have brought them under fire. Bron has been vocal on such issues many times when he’s asked to address them. But nothing concrete lays out of it and it’s always an exit passage.
Adam Silver in the past has even questioned the reason behind NBA being forced to boycott China. As he pointed out that most of the American companies do major business with China. Even former NBA star, Enes Kanter Freedom is trying to reveal their relationship as he’s actively working against the social injustice practices taking place in Communist China.
Enes has even tried to show the world the unethical practices major companies related to the league and their superstars like LeBron James commit in the communist nation. But even Adam Silver has been real about the situation and addressed it without worrying about the league’s profit. When Daryl Morey tweeted out in support of the protest in Hong Kong, Silver backed him up instead of bending the knee to China.
