Lamar Odom knows a thing or two about winning championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was a key part of the Lakers’ back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010, playing alongside Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol.
Now, he’s watching from afar as another Lakers superstar tries to lead the team to glory: LeBron James.
Odom has nothing but praise for James, whom he called “the God of basketball” in a recent interview with TMZ Sports.
“God James. His name is God James. The god of basketball,” Odom said. “As long as we healthy, we’re gonna win a championship.”
Odom also weighed in on the Lakers’ acquisition of Tristan Thompson, who was James’ teammate at the Cleveland Cavaliers when they won the title in 2016. Odom said that Thompson will bring toughness and rebounding to the Lakers, and that he will fill a similar role to what Odom did during his time in L.A.
“I think he’s gonna be like me,” Odom said. “He’s gonna be like me when I was playing with Kobe and Pau. He’s gonna do all the dirty work.”
LeBron James will try to lead the Lakers to the top of the West
James, who is in his 20th season in the league, is showing no signs of slowing down. He is averaging 28.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game while shooting 50% from the field and 32.1% from three-point range.
He has led the Lakers to a 43-39 record, which puts them as 7th seed in the Western Conference. James is widely considered one of the greatest players of all time, and he has a chance to add to his legacy this postseason. He has already won four NBA titles, four Finals MVP awards, and four regular season MVP awards in his illustrious career.
He is also chasing some historic milestones, such as becoming the first player ever to score 40,000 points, 10,000 rebounds and 10,000 assists in his career. He currently has 38,652 points, 10,667 rebounds, and 10,420 assists.
If James can lead the Lakers to another championship this year, he will join an elite club of players who have won at least five rings in their careers. He will also become the first player ever to win titles with four different teams (Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Los Angeles Clippers).
James has faced some criticism and doubt from fans and media over his age, his team’s chemistry and his competition in the West. But he has always thrived on challenges and adversity, and he has proven time and time again that he can overcome any obstacle. As Odom said, James is “the God of basketball”, and he will try to prove it once again this postseason.
