The Miami Heat pulled off a huge upset, as they beat the team with the best record in the league in the first round. The Heat had a two-game stretch in the Play-In tournament to make it to the playoffs. As they entered the postseason being an 8th seed, no one expected Miami to get past Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks had a record of 58-24, the best in the league. Going into the postseason, Milwaukee was favored to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Though the Bucks couldn’t outlast the Heat as they took Game 5 in overtime, winning the series 4-1. Milwaukee seemed pretty solid in the regular season’s second half, losing only ten games in their last 42. Miami, led by Jimmy Butler, was no match for Giannis’ Bucks on paper. This was indeed an unexpected end to a season for the Bucks. The reason had a lot to do with Giannis being injured.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the most dominant players to face in the postseason. The Greek Freak put up monster numbers in the last postseason, averaging 31 points and 14 rebounds a game. Despite leading the playoff stats, the Bucks fell short in the second round versus the Boston Celtics in seven games. Since their championship season, Giannis has been filling the stat sheet with MVP numbers. In Game 1 versus the Heat, Giannis injured his back, due to which he missed Games 2 and 3.
This injury had a toll on him that kept him from his usual dominance. In the win-or-lose Game 5, Giannis threw it all on the floor, scoring 38 points and grabbing 20 rebounds. Post the Game 5 loss, Giannis seemed frustrated, for if it wasn’t for his injury, the outcome would’ve been different. What made the situation worse for Giannis was the post-game press conference, when he was asked a ludicrous question.
Giannis Antetokounmpo knows no failure in sports
Following the game, Giannis Antetokounmpo sat for the post-game interview questions. The Greek Freak was asked whether the season was a failure for the Milwaukee Bucks by reporter Eric Nehms. Giannis had already been upset due to his injury, and the question had him more out of place. “You asked me the same question last year Eric. Okay, do you get promotion every year? In your job? No right, so every year you work as a failure. Yes or no?” said Giannis.
“No. Every year you work, you work towards something. Towards a goal, right? Which is to get a promotion, to be able to take care of your family… It’s not a failure, it’s steps to success… Michael Jordan played 15 years, won six championships, the other nine years, was it failure“, asserted the two-time MVP.
Antetokounmpo doesn’t believe every year to be a failure. He highlights how every team in the league works towards one goal and one goal only, winning a championship. Yet only one out of the 30 teams takes it home.
“It’s a wrong question. There’s no failure in sports. You know there’s good days, bad days, some days you are able to be successful, some days you’re not. Some days it’s your turn, some days it’s not your turn. And that’s what’s sports about. You don’t always win”, Giannis added. He firmly stated his opinion on how the season wasn’t a failure for his team.
While Giannis’ injury played a huge role in the series, he never mentioned the possible outcome if he was to be healthy. He is a true team player and a leader. It will be interesting to see how the 2021 champs plan their next season and whether they could drape Milwaukee in gold again.
