Bronny James is heading to the University of Southern California (USC). The son of Lakers superstar LeBron James, announced his commitment to the Trojans on Saturday via Instagram. His father shared the news on his own account, writing, “So damn proud of you kid!”
Bronny James has been under the spotlight since he was a child, following his father’s footsteps on the basketball court. He played at Sierra Canyon High School (Chatsworth, Calif.), where he paired up with current NBA players Ziaire Williams and Brandon Boston Jr., as well as highly ranked prospects Amari Bailey and Isaiah Elohim. He put up 13.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.8 steals per game in his senior season and improved significantly from his junior year.
Bronny James also received two of the most prestigious honors for high school boys basketball players: named a McDonald’s All-American and chosen to represent Team USA at the Nike Hoop Summit. His father, LeBron James, was ecstatic about his son’s achievements and potential.
Junior James picked USC over Ohio State and Oregon, two other schools with Nike connections and ties to him and his father. Ohio State is LeBron’s favorite college team, as he hails from Akron, Ohio. Oregon is where Nike founder Phil Knight went to school and where Bronny has already signed a NIL deal.

NBA Twitter reacts to Bronny James’ USC announcement
However, not everyone was impressed by Bronny James’ achievements and potential. Some Twitter users mocked him as a “future NBA bust” and compared him to other sons of famous NBA players who failed to live up to the expectations, such as Michael Jordan’s son Marcus Jordan or Shaquille O’Neal’s son Shareef O’Neal.
Some even suggested that Bronny James would retire early from basketball and pursue other interests, such as streaming video games or acting in movies. Here’s what NBA Twitter had to say:
Bronny’s decision to play college basketball also raised questions about LeBron’s retirement plans. Earlier, LeBron placed his with that he wants to play with his son in the NBA before he calls it quits. He has a contract with the Lakers that runs through 2024 and has a player option in 2025.
If Bronny is a one-and-done at USC, he could enter the NBA draft in 2024, when he will be 19 years old. That means LeBron James could either join him at USC for a year or wait for him in the NBA.
Bronny James’ commitment to USC is a big win for the Trojans and a big story for college basketball fans. It also adds another layer of intrigue to LeBron James’ future plans and whether he will get to fulfill his dream of playing with his son.
