Despite serious losses to key players, the Memphis Grizzlies had a promising season, winning 51 games and earning the second seed in the Western Conference. But after losing to the Los Angeles Lakers, their postseason run was over. As the team prepares for the offseason, they must make a key choice about Dillon Brooks, their starting small forward.
Before June 30, Brooks, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, has the option to agree to a four-year, $65.2 million extension with the Grizzlies. According to sources, the 27-year-old is reportedly looking for a bigger contract in free agency and has his sights set on making more than $16 million a year.
While Brooks has contributed significantly to the Grizzlies’ success, his inconsistent shooting has occasionally cost the team. Nevertheless, he has been given some consideration for this season’s NBA All-Defensive team due to his outstanding defense. The Grizzlies may be forced to re-sign Brooks to keep their competitive edge if they are unable to find an upgrade at small forward.
The organization runs the danger of losing Brooks to a young team with cap room who is prepared to advance to the next stage of their development. Even though Brooks might be able to negotiate a higher salary in the open market, a four-year contract worth $18–20 million annually would put him on par with other defensive specialists in the league.
The Grizzlies are in good financial standing and are prepared to handle upcoming CBA changes. However, they must compare the value of continuing to have financial flexibility over the long term with the potential cost of losing a key player.
NBA Twitter trolls Dillon Brooks
Dillon Brooks has been criticized on social media in addition to having an uncertain future with the Memphis Grizzlies. NBA Twitter was eager to make fun of Brooks for his alleged flaws, especially his inconsistent shooting and frequent defensive errors.
Some Twitter users have even gone so far as to suggest that Brooks’ NBA career is over, One user wrote “Get ready to learn Chinese buddy.” Another user wrote, “Not even China, tell him to just retire.”
But the criticism of Brooks continues to grow, with some fans claiming that he is not deserving of the contract he is asking for in free agency. Others have claimed that he is not a dependable scorer based on his low shooting percentages and tendency to take stupid shots.
