DeMarcus Cousins is not ready to give up on his NBA dream. The four-time All-Star has signed with the Guaynabo Mets of the Puerto Rican Professional Basketball League, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Tuesday.
Cousins, 32, has been out of the NBA since last season when he played for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Denver Nuggets. He showed glimpses of his former self as a dominant scorer and rebounder, averaging 9.0 points and 5.6 rebounds in 15.0 minutes per game. He also stepped up in the playoffs for the Nuggets, scoring 10.6 points in 11.4 minutes per game while shooting 65.5 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from beyond the arc.
However, Cousins has also been hampered by injuries that have limited his availability and mobility. He missed the entire 2019-20 season with a torn ACL, after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2018 and a torn quad in 2019. He has also been known for his fiery personality and outspokenness, which may have deterred some teams from signing him.
Cousins still believes he has a lot to offer in the NBA, and he recently claimed he was the third-best center in the league behind Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid. He said he would love to get a “real answer” for why he was not on an NBA roster this season.
By signing with the Guaynabo Mets, Cousins is hoping to showcase his skills and prove he can still play at a high level. He will join a team that is currently second in the Puerto Rican league standings with a 10-4 record. The league runs from February to May, giving Cousins a chance to play competitive basketball before the NBA free agency period begins.

NBA Twitter reacts to DeMarcus Cousins’ decision
Cousins’ decision to sign with a Puerto Rican team was met with mixed reactions on Twitter. Some fans were more skeptical and critical of Cousins’ move. They questioned his motivation and his self-awareness, wondering if he was delusional or desperate. They also mocked his injury history and his claim of being a top center in the NBA.
Other fans expressed support and admiration for Cousins’ determination to keep playing and chase his NBA dream. They wished him luck and hoped he would find his way back to the league.
Cousins joins the Puerto Rican team with hopes of impressing NBA scouts and earning a comeback opportunity whether that will happen or not only the future will tell.
