The MVP award is certainly one of the most important in-season awards that have fans brawling. Every year, at least five players from all teams emerge as legitimate contenders for the coveted award. While several will always disagree with who gets the trophy, the MVP clearly belongs to the one player who has had a major influence on their team’s success.
The MVP winners in the past NBA seasons feature some legends of the game. Players like Micheal Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Stephen Curry have all picked up this remarkable feat. However, in recent times, two dominant players have won back-to-back MVP awards. Giannis Antetokounmpo won in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, whereas Nikola Jokic is the reigning MVP, having won the 2020-21 and 2021-22 MVPs.
While disagreements amongst fans are a natural part of the process, sometimes players themselves come out to voice their opinions. Giannis Antetokounmpo recently spoke in an interview about who he feels has been the MVP for the past couple of seasons. “I believe the last five years I’ve been the MVP,” he said. “Do I want a third MVP? Hell f–king yeah I want a third one. I am extremely competitive” the Bucks superstar said on his drive to pick up his third MVP in fiver years.
Antetokounmpo also spoke about how leading his team to win is always his priority. Talking about his competitive nature and high-class performance, he said that he always tries to make his team successful. “I try to make my team successful. That’s what I get paid for. That’s what I’m here for.” He also spoke about never asking for an MVP award even though he feels he deserves it.
What is the 2022-23 NBA MVP ladder looking at the end of the regular season?

The MVP race this season has consistently been tight. While the reigning MVP Nikola Jokic has been on the list, he is closely followed by Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo. As competitive as it could get, it is still as uncertain as a week ago. With Nikola Jokic reclaiming his number-one spot, he’s looking strong to pick up his third MVP on the trot.
Nikola Jokic has averaged 24.5 PPG, 11.8 RPG, and 9.8 APG, the primary reason behind the Denver Nuggets’ dominance this season. The Nuggets have clinched the number-one spot in the Western Conference with 53 wins. His primary and close competitor, the beast from the Philadelphia 76ers, Joel Embiid is right up the alley as well. Embiid averages about 33.1 PPG, 10.2 RPG and 4.2 APG. He’s led the Philadelphia 76ers to clinch third place in the Eastern Conference.
Giannis Antetokounmpo has been averaging around 31.1 PPG, 11.8 RPG and 5.7 APG and has been third on the MVP ladder, just marginally behind the top two contenders. Needless to say that even though the MVP ladder is in favor of Jokic, it is still open for Embiid and Antetokounmpo. Regardless of who ends up as this season’s MVP, the race has been exhilarating and exciting, to say the least.
