The soccer transfer market recently underwent a drastic change with the involvement of Saudi Arabian teams. They are offering huge salaries to stars that their current clubs can’t even imagine matching, luring these players to play in Saudi Arabia.
Reportedly, Cristiano Ronaldo is earning $200 million a year while playing for Al Nassr. And to top this off even more absurd offer has been presented to French superstar Kylian Mbappe, with Al Hilal offering him $776 million for a year of play.
In contrast to the NBA, which imposes a salary cap on player earnings, soccer lacks such restrictions. Consequently, many NBA players were shocked by the size of the contract and expressed their desire to transfer to the Saudi basketball league.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, one of the most hilarious people in the league, jokingly tweeted that he resembles Mbappe and that Al Hilal can have him for that contract. Mbappe reacted to Giannis’ tweet with laughing emojis.
Giannis is currently on a 5-year, $228 million contract with the Milwaukee Bucks. To put things in perspective, Al Hilal offered PSG a $332 million transfer fee just to sign Mbappe for a one-year deal, which makes the total offer sheet exceed $1.1 billion. However, Mbappe is likely to decline Al Hilal’s offer as he plans to join the Spanish club Real Madrid next season.
Giannis Antetokounmpo doubtful to play in the FIBA World Cup after knee surgery
Mbappe nearly won back-to-back FIFA World Cups last year but missed by an incredibly small margin. Now, Giannis has the chance to win the upcoming FIBA World Cup in August. The only doubt is whether Giannis will participate.
Giannis made it to the preliminary 22-man squad for the event, but reports suggest that he may only be perfectly healthy when the training camp approaches. An injury he suffered during the playoff series in Miami led to him having to undergo knee surgery, which ultimately eliminated his Bucks in the first round of the playoffs.
Dimitrios Itoudis, the Head Coach of the Greece national basketball team, expressed the team’s eagerness to have Giannis join them. However, they are closely monitoring his recovery with the Bucks following the recent knee surgery. Giannis, on his part, is eager to support his national team in any way possible.
“We’re currently missing Giannis Antetokounmpo, at least for the initial call, as he underwent surgery, and his recovery will take some time,” Itoudis said. “Naturally, our focus is on closely monitoring his progress with the Bucks, his team. There’s no doubt about his eagerness to support the national team; he’s proven his dedication during practice,” the Greece coach further said.
