Recent developments in the NBA coaching world have highlighted how Doc Rivers unexpectedly secured the head coaching position for the Philadelphia 76ers in 2020. Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas has claimed that Rivers sidelined Tyronn Lue in pursuing the desired role.
According to Arenas, Lue was originally on track to take charge of the 76ers. “Tyronn Lue was supposed to have that team,” Arenas revealed candidly. He added that Rivers had sent Lue to Philadelphia, actively lobbying on his behalf, stating, “This is your guy, he’s a great coach, and this is gonna be good for you guys.”
However, the situation drastically changed after Rivers’ LA Clippers gave up a 3-1 lead in the NBA Bubble. Rivers purportedly reached out to the 76ers as his contract was about to expire, expressing his desire to fill the head coaching position. “He knew he was getting fired, so he called Philly and said, ‘I want the job now,” Arenas shared.
Despite the high hopes placed on Rivers, his tenure with the 76ers did not meet the anticipated results. For three consecutive seasons, the team lost in the second round of the playoffs for three straight seasons, with each series seeing them surrender a lead. Rivers was fired due to this ongoing pattern, and 2019 NBA champion Nick Nurse, the previous coach of the Raptors, took his place.
Tyronn Lue’s journey with the Clippers
Amidst the cloud of controversy, Tyronn Lue emerged as the head coach for the LA Clippers. His initial season promised great potential, with the Clippers reaching their inaugural Conference Finals. Unfortunately, Kawhi Leonard, one of their pivotal players, suffered an ACL tear, preventing the Clippers from surpassing the Phoenix Suns to secure a spot in the NBA Finals.
In the following seasons, Lue had to deal with the team’s recurring injuries, which kept two of its major players, Leonard and Paul George, out of the lineup. The Clippers’ performance was significantly impacted by these setbacks, which led to them missing the playoffs in 2022 and losing in the first round the following year.
Despite the challenges, Lue has proven his worth by leading the Clippers to a solid win-loss record of 131-103. His achievements are evident as he has led the team to greater heights in the playoffs than Rivers’ seven-year tenure.
As the NBA universe continues to evolve, the stories of Rivers and Lue provide proof of the game’s complex dynamics, both on and off the court.
