Gilbert Arenas appears less inclined than some players to sacrifice a significant portion of his earnings for a championship ring. In a refreshingly candid statement, the former Washington Wizard outright rejected the opportunity to trade his career earnings of $171 million for $120 million and an NBA ring.
He asserted that he derives greater satisfaction from earning substantial wages than from winning a championship. Rather than valuing a championship ring highly, he stated that he would only consider purchasing one if it cost no more than $10,000.
Speaking on his podcast, Gil’s Arena,
$50 million for a ring? F*ck no. The f*ck's wrong with you? You're crazy as hell - They sell that mother**** for 10 grand. I can go buy NBA rings right now on sale from players who won but because they weren't the best player that was on that team, they got to sell that ring for this thing called money.
Throughout his 11-year tenure in the league, Arenas, boasting an average of 20.7 points per game, was consistently recognized as an electrifying point guard. However, he never had the opportunity to contribute to a championship-winning team. While some may speculate that Arenas will eventually regret his decision, he remains content with earning millions from playing basketball at an elite level.
Gilbert Arena reveals he was broke as a rookie
Despite signing a second-round contract worth $330,000, former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas found himself financially strapped during his rookie season in the NBA.
Reflecting on his career and sharing candid anecdotes with Bleacher Report in 2019, “Agent Zero” reminisced about living paycheck to paycheck and experiencing financial strain in the middle of the month.
Imagine trying to be an NBA player for $400 per month. Try going on a date in the middle of the month with $100 left. I got gas, I had two dogs and a girlfriend at the time. There was no date night! It was horrible.
Fortunately for “Agent Zero,” his talent propelled him out of financial troubles, as he excelled for the Warriors and far exceeded the expectations of his rookie contract. Consequently, the University of Arizona product landed a lucrative $60 million deal with the Washington Wizards after just his third season.
