Just before March 2023, Ja Morant was one of the NBA’s most beloved athletes. He was selected 2nd overall in the NBA Draft in 2019 by the Memphis Grizzlies. As a result, Morant rose to superstardom quickly with his high flying dunks and for posterizing players for fun, almost on a nightly basis. He became an all-star, signed multiple endorsement deals, and made the Grizzlies a must-watch team.

In March 2023, Ja Morant flashed a gun on his Instagram live, which led to him being suspended for eight games for violating the NBA’s code of conduct. Morant apologized for his actions and was ready to move on from that incident. Unfortunately, just 2 months later, Morant appeared to flash a gun again, this time on his friend’s Instagram live, drawing the ire of fans, legends and analysts of the game. A week ago, the NBA suspended Morant for 25 games to start the 2023-24 season.

Gilbert Arenas, who played 11 seasons in the NBA from 2001 to 2012, was once suspended for 50 games in January 2010 for carrying guns into his team’s locker room. If there’s anyone who can relate to Morant’s current situation, it’s Arenas. The former player has slammed the NBA for the way they have handled Morant’s suspension, calling it “too harsh”.

Speaking to TMZ Sports earlier this week, Arenas said, “He’s already taken Ls. He’s taken Ls on his public image.” He implied that Morant has already suffered a lot off the court with big brands like Nike and Powerade. He believes that taking small breaks is important and Silver should have considered that before handing out his punishment.

He also added that many players in the league have been suspended only for 1 to 7 games at the maximum for gun-related offenses. Hence, he said that Morant’s lengthy suspension was not fair. He concluded by saying that he’s willing to help Morant if he were to ever reach out for help.

While Arenas was talking from his own experience and genuinely wanted to offer help and advice to Morant, NBA Twitter was not buying it. Here are some of the best reactions.

Morant has a long way to go in his NBA career. It is of utmost importance for him to do some soul-searching, speak to close family and friends and just focus on getting better at basketball this offseason. It also helps greatly that the Grizzlies now have a terrific veteran leader in Marcus Smart on their roster. He will bring the team together in tough times and try to avoid any kind of mistake in the future.
