“Given a GOLD MINE,” Gilbert Arenas says it was obvious for Brooklyn Nets to fire Steve Nash
Gilbert Arenas and Steve Nash
After their latest victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers on 26th December, the Brooklyn Nets have solidified their position in the Eastern Conference. Needless to say after securing the 3rd place in the East they are surely bound for the playoffs. At the start of the season, their chances seemed very bleak under Steve Nash’s guidance. Many foresaw Nash’s firing including former Wizards player Gilbert Arenas. Since his firing, the Nets have shown that they have what it takes to make a shot at the title this season.
Arenas commenting when asked if he was surprised by Nash’s firing said, “Yeah, not surprised, no,” Arenas said. “And the reason I say that is because he was given a gold mine and the gold was not there, right? Right. It has nothing to do with him. The gold was not there. Together, it wasn’t one of those things where they played, you know, 70-plus games with each other every year, and he just failed as a coach”
Gilbert Arenas further added, “And I’m like, well, get rid of him. I’m not going to do it publicly, you know. We were here for Steve Nash, and then you know, eventually let’s, you know, see how the season starts off, and then we’ll fire him. I mean, do you see the Nets? I mean, finally, getting to where they’re supposed to be, you know? They have the pieces. The pieces, you know, they have the pieces at the end of the day.”
It’s not difficult to concur with Gilbert Arenas on this. Arenas makes a good point because the Nets have performed significantly better after Steve Nash was sacked with the same pieces. Maybe Nash will have another opportunity to coach in the league. However, most people believe that is unlikely. Many think that if he couldn’t succeed with that talent, how can he succeed anywhere else?

Brooklyn Nets’ unreal run after parting ways with Steve Nash
Since taking over as coach after former Brooklyn Nets coach Steve Nash was fired, Jacque Vaughn has resurrected Brooklyn. At the time of Nash’s firing on November 1, Brooklyn had a record of 2–5. Since then, they have improved to 22-12 and are third in the Eastern Conference. This includes the team’s current nine-game victory streak, which is the longest in the league.
One could argue that the Nets are quite fortunate with how things turned out, especially given that Vaughn wasn’t even Brooklyn’s top candidate for the position initially. On Wednesday against Atlanta, Vaughn and the Nets will try to extend their winning streak to 10 unbeaten games in the league.
