In his prime, Gilbert Arenas was known for his on-court prowess and off-court antics, captivating fans and teammates alike with his unique personality. While he is often associated with his time as a Washington Wizard, it was with the Golden State Warriors that Arenas first made a name for himself in the NBA. However, his early days with the Warriors were not without their share of controversy.
During an interview on the “Young Person Basketball Podcast”, Arenas shared a wild story from his rookie years with the struggling 2001-02 Warriors. The team ended up in last place in the Western Conference with a miserable 21-61 record, featuring a roster filled with ageing veterans such as Mookie Blaylock, Dean Garrett, and Chris Mills, who seemed out of sync with Arenas’ youthful enthusiasm.
Arenas recalled a unusual task his older teammates assigned him – the infamous “donut runs.” Being the youngest player on the team, Arenas found himself responsible for getting donuts for his teammates during practices and games. Initially, he didn’t mind the duty, as the donut shop was conveniently located near the team’s practice facility and his residence.
However, the situation quickly took a turn when his teammates became increasingly particular about their donuts. They demanded fresh ones every time, with a strict rule against buying them the night before due to time stamps on the packaging. Complicating things further, the teammates refused to reimburse Arenas for his expenses, leaving the young rookie to pay the bill himself.
“One day I just got mad, licked all the donuts, got all the glaze off, and put baby powder on it, ” Arenas said. “They took a bite out of it, ooooooh, what? I got a whooping that day. That was the last day I had to buy donuts though.”
With the growing frustration, Arenas decided to take matters into his own hands. One day, driven by anger, he came up with a mischievous plan that showcased his wild and unpredictable nature. He licked all the donuts, removing the glaze, and covered them with baby powder.

The Golden State Warriors’ struggles and Arenas’ departure
The incident involving Gilbert Arenas and his Warriors teammates sheds light on the challenging period the franchise went through during the 2001-02 NBA season. With a terrible 21-61 record, the team found themselves at the bottom of the Western Conference, desperately searching for a path toward future success.
Despite being a rookie and a second-round draft pick, Arenas quickly established himself as a noteworthy contributor on the court. He played in 47 games, averaging 10.9 ppg, and emerged as the team’s fifth-highest scorer during the season.
However, the strained relationship between Arenas and his teammates, as highlighted by the donut prank incident, likely played a role in his decision to part ways with the Warriors after just two years. In 2003, he was traded to the Washington Wizards, where he went on to become well-known and experience the most success of his NBA career.
