“Less clothing and fewer UGLY players” Gilbert Arenas’ shambolic idea to promote WNBA made fans lose RESPECT for him

“Less clothing and fewer UGLY players” Gilbert Arenas’ shambolic idea to promote WNBA made fans lose RESPECT for him

Gilbert Arenas, The players from WNBA in 2020

Gilbert Arenas, a former NBA player, has proposed a strategy to elevate the interest in women’s basketball: more conventionally beautiful players and slimmer clothes. Fans and the league itself condemned the three-time All-Star for his “repugnant” and “utterly disrespectful” comments mocking WNBA players.

Four years ago, in an interview, Gilbert Arenas, who has been outspoken on a variety of NBA-related issues, offered an interesting and, in a way, “sarcastic” solution to the popularity situation. In a word, Arenas thinks that starting with fewer uniforms by more beautiful athletes is a terrific idea. The pay gap between the WNBA and NBA has received a lot of attention recently. The apparent disparity in popularity of two leagues is a plausible explanation for this. Arenas later  declared that he would not retract his misogynistic remarks towards WNBA players after expressing them.

Gilbert Arenas and his NBA career in a nutshell

The Golden State Warriors acquired Gilbert Arenas in the first round of the 2001 NBA Draft and I n his first two seasons with the Warriors, he showed potential. However, it was with the Washington Wizards that he truly began to rise to fame. He played with the team for 7 and a half seasons, making all three All-Star Game rosters, two All-NBA Third Team selections, an All-NBA Second Team nomination, and winning the NBA Most Improved Award. One of the league’s top scorers at that time, he adopted the moniker “Agent 0” and helped the club to four postseason appearances, including an appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals.

However, he sustained a torn MCL during the close of the 2006–07 season, and the injuries started to mount. Due to knee problems from 2007 to 2010 and an unpleasant guns incident in the locker room that resulted in a significant ban, Arenas missed a lot of games. He was traded to Orlando in 2010 which resulted  the Magic making the playoffs, even though he struggled to perform at a high level there. He later joined the Memphis Grizzlies for the 2011–12 season, which ended up being his final one in the NBA at the age of 30. Following that, he was spotted appearing in both the Chinese Premier League and the BIG3 league.

Arenas and his mockery of the WNBA

Gilbert Arenas said that WNBA players looking like cast members from ‘Orange is the New Black’ have driven away fans from the world’s top women’s basketball league in a sexist Instagram video that featured two fitness models competing one-on-one. Later, Arenas repeated his remarks, implying that guys who disagreed with his plan for a sexualized WNBA were gay. He thinks that in addition to their brilliance on the basketball court, their lack of clothing is one of the factors contributing to their success. Arenas’ remarks were denounced in statements from the NBA and WNBA as “repugnant, completely insulting, and flat-out wrong.”

According to Gilbert Arenas, there is an issue with WNBA players imitating guys, and it has to be fixed. He made the implication that women ought to place more emphasis on being more feminine than on dressing like their NBA compatriots. His words sparked a lot of anger, particularly from the WNBA and NBA, which issued a statement denouncing him. Even if his remarks can be viewed as improper for this particular topic, Arenas is renowned for speaking his thoughts regardless of the subject.
