Kobe Bryant’s legacy lives on in the hearts of many NBA fans, especially those in Los Angeles who witnessed his greatness for 20 seasons with the Lakers. The Crypto.com Arena, formerly known as the Staples Center, is where Kobe played most of his home games, winning five championships and becoming one of the best players of all time. Many fans consider it “The House That Kobe Built”, as his wife Vanessa Bryant wrote on her Instagram story in November 2021.

Now, Vanessa has given another clue that a Kobe statue may be on the way. On her Instagram story on April 14, 2023, she posted a video of her showing post-its of things she needs to get done for the new year. Among them were “Kobe Statue” and “Hall of Fame”.

The Hall of Fame refers to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, where Kobe was posthumously inducted in 2020 as part of a star-studded class that included Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett. The ceremony was held in May 2021, with Vanessa delivering an emotional speech on behalf of her late husband.

The Kobe Statue, however, is still a mystery. The Lakers have not officially announced any plans to erect a statue of Kobe outside the arena, but they have expressed their intention to do so in the past. In 2017, Lakers owner Jeanie Buss said that Kobe had requested that his statue would carry the number 24, which he wore for the second half of his career. In 2020, Lakers legend Magic Johnson said that he hoped to see a Kobe statue “ASAP”.

But what pose should the statue depict? That is the question that many NBA fans have been debating on social media, especially after a Twitter account called LakeShowYo posted a screenshot of Vanessa’s Instagram story with the caption “It’s coming…”. The tweet went viral, with over 8,000 likes and nearly 400 retweets, and sparked a discussion among fans about how they would like to see Kobe immortalized.

Some suggested iconic moments from Kobe’s career, such as his game-winning shot against the Phoenix Suns in 2006, his alley-oop pass to Shaquille O’Neal in the 2000 NBA Finals, or his celebration after winning his fifth ring in 2010. Others proposed more generic poses, such as his signature fadeaway jumper, his defensive stance, or his finger wag.

Some fans also wanted to see Gianna included in the statue, as she was an aspiring basketball player who shared her father’s passion and talent for the game. A bronze sculpture of Kobe and Gianna was placed at the crash site in Calabasas, California on January 26, 2022, but some fans hoped to see a similar tribute outside the arena.

Whatever pose the statue ends up having, it will surely be a fitting tribute to one of the greatest players and personalities in NBA history. Kobe Bryant left an indelible mark on the game of basketball and on millions of fans around the world. His legacy will live on through his family, his foundation, his academy, his books, his films and his statue.
