Gradey Dick had a night to remember on Thursday. The Toronto Raptors drafted Dick with the 13th pick in the first round of the 2023 NBA draft. He played for the Kansas Jayhawks and averaged 14.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists.
But before he heard his name called by Commissioner Adam Silver, he made a splash on the red carpet with his eye-catching outfit. The 6-foot-8 guard from Kansas wore a red sequin suit that he said was inspired by Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, the classic movie set in his home state.
“It’s all from Kansas. Dorothy has her little slippers. I got my Dorothy suit,” Dick told the NBA in a pre-draft interview.
Dick was not the only draft prospect who drew attention for his outfit. Jalen Hood-Schifino wore a green silk suit with a black bowtie and a chain. Scoot Henderson sported a black suit jacket with rhinestones, chains, and a grill. Victor Wembanyama, who went first overall to the San Antonio Spurs, kept it simple with a green suit.
Dick was a high school basketball star who earned the best player award at Sunrise Christian Academy. He continued to impress in his freshman year at Lawrence, where he showed off his NBA-ready skills.
