Desmond Bane has been lethal from beyond the arc for the Memphis Grizzlies this season. He was a candidate for the Most Improved Player Trophy this season with staggering numbers from deep. The 23-year-old put on a show in the first round when the Grizzlies triumphed over the Minnesota Timberwolves in six games, shooting 46 percent from distance and averaging 23.5 points per game.

The No. 30 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Bane started in all 76 games he played in during the regular season for the Grizzlies, averaging 18.2 points per game. He has been constantly described as a budding sidekick for star point guard Ja Morant, with his shooting ability opening up even more space for Morant to drive down the lane. The Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane has been relatively quiet through the first two games of the second-round NBA playoff series against the Golden State Warriors as he plays through a back injury, but his confidence appears to be off the charts.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Bane claimed that Stephen Curry is the only 3-point shooter better than him right now. While comparing himself to arguably the Greatest Shooter in the game seems a little far-fetched, but Bane’s has put up some preposterous numbers. Bane actually has the most 3-pointers this postseason with 29, two more than Curry and Thompson – who have 27 threes each. On being asked who is a better shooter than him currently, Bane responded :

“Steph Curry. Other than that, you’re gonna have to show me. Steph deserves his flowers, and Klay Thompson, I mean, he’s come back from injury. But outside of that, I want to be looked at and talked about in the same conversation as those guys… That’s what I’m striving for.”

Bane’s 46.1% three-point percentage ranks 1st out of the 51 players who have taken at least 50 threes in the playoffs during the first two years of their careers. The Grizzlies star ranked second in the entire NBA in three-point shooting percentage at 43.6% behind Luke Kennard of the Los Angeles Clippers.

On the whole, these playoffs have placed a spotlight on what Bane has been doing all year, and how important his long shot is to Memphis’s offense. Bane has only made 2 of the 9 three pointers he has launched, after being plagued by a back injury. His skill is something that initially put Bane on the NBA’s radar and will be the prime reason Memphis may have to offer him a max contract when he becomes eligible for extension next summer. The Warriors will hope that Bane’s shooting stays that way and the Splash Brothers will establish their dominance, making Bane wait for the title of the ‘Best Shooter in The League’.
