Hakeem Olajuwon was the prime example of a traditional center. His time during the league was highly competitive and filled with dominant players such as the GOAT Michael Jordan. The Dream was one of MJ biggest rivals and also had his chance to win two titles with the Houston Rockets.
The Hall of Famer retired as the All-Time leader in blocks and tore through the league on defense. He averaged 21.8 points and 11.1 rebounds throughout his career that led him to becoming arguably the greatest center of all time as well. The legend had many arguments and conflicts throughout his career but it never seemed to phase him.
Vernon Maxwell reveals he could have stabbed the Dream to death
In a game that took place against the Seattle Sonics, the Rockets were not having the best night. Vernon Maxwell who was a specialist of the 3&D role and teammate of the Dream, was apparently frustrated over the fact that they were losing. Despite Hakeem Olajuwon warning him to stop cursing, he did not.
“This MF slapped the sh*t out of me… hit me so hard, knocked me out the chair. I jumped up, I grabbed my chair, busted glass all over the damn locker room… police come with guns drawn… They got the guns on me at a professional halftime… I broke the glass and I picked up a big piece of glass, and I was going to chase Dream and stab the shit out of him… That’s how it was before (he had chosen to become Muslim).”
Hakeem Olajuwon speaks on his religious choices
The 12x NBA All-Star revealed how dedicated he was to the religion of Islam. He claimed to have given himself over to the faith and made sure he spent all his time away from work with the Quran. Maxwell who joined Gilbert Arenas on Fubo Sports also spoke about the changes the Dream’s decision to become Muslim had brought him.
“That sh*ts crazy, that’s unbelievable man, I mean he got to be in the mean Top 5 centers ever to play this game man, so ya man I mean quiet, humble guy, you know didn’t say a lot, wasn’t in the spotlight like that, you know they want all that sh*t. So I think that’s what like hindered him a little bit, I mean totally a great person when he became Muslim, now, I’m gonna tell you to say that before he became Muslim, that mo****f***er was tough to deal with… he slapped the sh*t out of you.”
