Toronto Raptors star Fred VanVleet has been fined for his comments on the officiating in the NBA and fans are not happy with it. NBA journalist Shams Charania tweeted: “Raptors’ Fred VanVleet has been fined $30,000 for comments about the NBA’s officiating on Wednesday night.” VanVleet was unapologetic in his attitude towards the refereeing and even admitted he was ready for the fine.

Fans on Twitter slammed the NBA and were on Fred’s side as he spoke about what was on everyone’s mind regarding officiating in the NBA. “As he said, he doesn’t care about the fines. Glad to see him speaking out,” said one fan on Twitter in the replies to Shams’s tweet. Here is what other fans had to say:

Many fans commented that the fine is insignificant for a player earning an NBA salary. VanVleet is a millionaire, and 30,000-dollar penalties will not matter to him as he said what he did to get the point across. VanVleet has not apologized for any comments and, like most players, will pay the fine for his behavior and move on with his game.

VanVleet added his name to a set of NBA players who have been fined for going at NBA referees. Even NBA superstars have had outbursts and have not escaped a fine. For instance, the Golden State Warriors trio of Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Draymond Green were all fined for their comments on NBA referees in 2019.

One of the most significant NBA fines of all time of 500k dollars was given to Mark Cuban. For instance, in 2002, The Dallas Mavericks owner was fined over 1.5 million dollars for his comments on referees alone. “Ed Rush might have been a great ref, but I wouldn’t hire him to manage a Dairy Queen. His interest is not in the integrity of the game or improving the officiating,”  said Cuban in 2002.

Fred VanVleet’s fine shows that the league will always stay the same. NBA players express their opinions on the level of consistency they expect in officiating and get penalized by fines. As a result, NBA officiating standards have been relatively low this season, with multiple bad calls and needless ejections. Despite the fans screaming for justice, Fred VanVleet.
