“He had no filter and he didn’t care if he hurt your feelings” Tristan Thompson, Kendrick Perkins weigh in on Kevin Garnett’s skillful trash-talking
Tristan Thompson and Kendrick Perkins call KG the best trash talker ever as he never cared about hurting feelings
Tristan Thompson
When it comes to the Mount Rushmore of trash talking, Kevin Garnett is normally the first name on everyone’s mind. Tristan Thompson recently revealed on NBA on ESPN that KG was the greatest trash talker he ever faced. “Young fella don’t know the plays“, said KG to Tristan Thompson. “I don’t want want no veterans talking smack to me, i was mad” said Tristan Thompson while recollecting an incident with KG in his rookie year. “I was trying to impress him but I forgot the plays“, said Tristan Thompson who was a big Kevin Garnett fan as a youngster.
Kendrick Perkins and Kevin Garnett were teammates in Boston and won a championship together in 2008. Perkins said “Yeah i agree with Tristan and KG got bars man”. Perkins said that KG used to come up with stuff nobody had ever heard of. “You had to be rehearsing that the night before”, said Kendrick Perkins while describing the skill of Garnett’s trash talk.
“There’s no other guy i can think of other than Kevin Garnett as far as approaching guys and pissing guys off… They wanted to fight him every single time, they really just hated KG“, said Kendrick Perkins. Kevin Garnett was a defensive stalwart as a player. He was a 12x NBA All defensive team member and 07/08 Defensive Player of the year. It is no surprise that he loved to trash talk to anyone that tried to score on him.
Tristan Thompson is not alone when it comes to KG trash talk stories
Tristan Thompson actually had it easy when it comes to taking stick from KG. As Kendrick Perkins described it, “It gotta be unfiltered if you want the best version of it” when talking about other examples of KG’s trash talk. While on the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast, KG described how he used to approach trash talk. “I might say something to a n**** and watch how he react to that,” said KG before exploding into trash talk mode in a historic clip of him reciting his trash talk. “Garbage ass n**** take that shot… Look at his coach, take that bum a** n**** out of this game“, said KG as the entire group is in splits.
Even after retiring KG has been a consistent trash-talker when he is at games. He has been spotted on the sidelines chirping at players telling them to ‘get that s*** out of here’. Like most good trash talkers, KG knew how to give it as well as take it, and in his words no one took it better than Tim Duncan. Yes, The Big Fundamental was the one player KG hated talking trash to. On the ‘All the Smoke’ podcast KG said, “What really pissed me off is the trash talk not affecting him… That’s when i stopped talking trash to Timmy because next thing you know he got 20/20/15“.
Trash talking is an art and players in the 2000s seem to be the best at it. In the current NBA, you have guys like Kevin Durant and Embiid who have admitted they lose talking trash to each other. Patrick Beverly is another notorious trash talker. The one thing trash talkers love more than talking trash is doing it to rookies. Tristan Thompson is just one example of several rookies who have had it rough from the get-go.
