The New York Knicks are on the brink of ending a decade-long playoff series drought after taking a commanding 3-1 lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers in front of a raucous Madison Square Garden crowd on Sunday. The Knicks’ victory marks the first time they have held a two-game playoff edge since their win over the Boston Celtics in the 2013 postseason’s opening round.
ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins was quick to praise the Knicks for their defensive prowess, calling them the “true definition of getting it out the mud.” In a league where offensive basketball is often prioritized, Perkins lauded the Knicks for their tenacity on the defensive end and their willingness to “get dirty.”
The Knicks’ Jalen Brunson, who Perkins referred to as “Playoff Brunson,” played a pivotal role in securing the win with his performance in Game 4. Perkins even went so far as to name Brunson as one of the top five players in the playoffs, highlighting his importance to the Knicks’ success.
Key players step up as Knicks take control in Game 4
The Knicks’ win over the Cavaliers was a hard-fought battle that saw both teams take turns in the lead. New York’s RJ Barrett and Jalen Brunson were the stars of the show, combining for 55 points to secure the victory.
Despite Quentin Grimes’ absence due to a right shoulder contusion, the Knicks were able to rely on the strong play of Josh Hart, who stepped up in the starting lineup. The team was able to feed off the energy of the Garden crowd and jumped out to an early lead thanks to Barrett’s aggressive play.
The Cavaliers, however, were not content to go down without a fight, and they were able to tie the game at 59-all with eight minutes left in the third quarter. But the Knicks weathered the storm and pulled away in the fourth quarter thanks to Barrett’s heroics and Brunson’s clutch shooting.
While Julius Randle had a game to forget, the Knicks were able to turn to their bench for contributions from players like Obi Toppin, who played crucial minutes down the stretch. The Knicks’ hustle and determination were on full display in the game’s closing moments, as Hart pulled down yet another offensive rebound to help seal the victory.
With one more win, the Knicks will advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals, marking a significant achievement for a team that had not won a playoff series in a decade. While there is still work to be done, the Knicks’ performance in Game 4 has given fans plenty of reason to believe that this team could make a deep run in the playoffs.
