Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce recently opened up about the infamous moment during the 2008 NBA Finals when he was taken off the court in a wheelchair, only to return moments later and lead the Celtics to a victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. In an interview, Pierce explained that the only thing he was “sh!tting” was on the Lakers, effectively shutting down rumors that he may have had an accident that required a trip to the bathroom.
Pierce’s performance during the 2008 NBA Finals was nothing short of impressive. He won Finals MVP by outplaying Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant and helped lead the Celtics to their first championship in over two decades alongside teammates Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. However, the lasting image from that series was the strange moment when Pierce was taken off the court in a wheelchair.
At the time, many speculated that Pierce may have faked an injury in order to leave the court and return with a sudden burst of energy. But Pierce has always maintained that he was legitimately injured and required the assistance of the wheelchair to get to the locker room. In his recent comments, he reiterated this point and dismissed any claims that he may have had an accident.
The Legacy of Paul Pierce

Regardless of what actually happened during that moment in the 2008 NBA Finals, there is no denying the impact that Paul Pierce had on the Boston Celtics and the league as a whole. Pierce was a 10-time All-Star and led the Celtics to two NBA Finals appearances, including the championship in 2008.
In addition to his on-court success, Pierce was also a fan favorite and a beloved figure in Boston. His loyalty to the Celtics and his willingness to embrace the city’s culture and community endeared him to fans and helped solidify his place in the franchise’s history.
As Pierce’s career winds down and he approaches eligibility for the Hall of Fame, his legacy is already secure. He will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest players in Celtics history and a key contributor to their championship run in 2008. And while the wheelchair incident may continue to be a topic of discussion, it ultimately does not detract from Pierce’s incredible career and impact on the sport of basketball.
