The reason for such mass shooting incidents is unclear to everyone, but is indeed safe to say that the Unites States of America is bleeding more than ever. Darius Lee, a 21-year old local basketball sensation, was pronounced dead at Lincoln Medical Center as his horrified mother mourned the loss of her son, who had returned from school for his vacations. A firearm was recovered at the scene, according to the NYPD, though no one has yet been arrested in connection with the shooting and investigations are ongoing.

Lee, who was from Harlem, New York, played for Houston Baptist University, where he was on track to graduate with his bachelor’s degree in December and was recently named HBU Robbie Robertson Male Student-Athlete of the Year, according to a statement from the school. Lee was a Second Team All-Southland performer as a senior last season after leading the Huskies in scoring and rebounding. He was sixth nationally in steals per game, while averaging 18.2 points per game.

“We are devastated. Darius was a remarkable young man who loved the Lord, his mom, his family, his teammates, his friends and his entire HBU family. We are in shock and cannot wrap our heads around this news. My heart breaks for his mom, his sister and his entire family, and for our basketball team. The only thing we find comfort in right now is knowing where Darius is. He is in the arms of Jesus… we know that as fact. And we will see him again some day.” Houston Baptist and Darius’s coach, Ron Cottrell said in a statement.

“He was an innocent kid that was in school playing basketball. He cared about basketball. He decided to stay outside one day, and this is what happens. My brother’s gone. Great kid. He’s gone for no reason. I’ve been trying to figure it out myself.” Lee’s sister Tiara spoke through tears, as she was aghast with such sudden news of his brother.

The shooting comes amid national concern over gun violence and as the U.S. Supreme Court is considering whether to strike down a law that makes it difficult to legally carry a handgun in New York. Shootings are down 11% so far this year in New York City, compared to last year. Murders are down 12% but are still at their second-highest level since 2012.

As we try to calm ourselves in these tough times, our heart goes out to the family of all the victims, specially Lee’s family, whose grief is incomprehensible to us. We wish them strength and hope, and pray that such events never occur in the future.
