“I don’t mind, I’ll take a fine. I don’t really care. I thought Ben Taylor was f***ing terrible tonight. On most nights, out of the 3, there’s 1 or 2 that f*** the game up,” Fred VanVleet said about the officials, and NBA officiating. VanVleet’s comments have not gone unnoticed, and the NBA has issued him a fine of $30,000 for his criticism of Taylor. Despite the consequences, VanVleet has not backed down, stating that while the fine was unfortunate, he believed he had spoken the truth.

When asked about his own foul trouble and officiating concerns in a different game on March 9th, Smart referred to VanVleet’s remarks and said he would let his colleague do all the talking to avoid getting fined himself. “I don’t know if you guys seen the Fred VanVleet thing, but that’s all I’m gonna say…I’m gonna let Fred do all the talking,” said Smart.
