“I wouldn’t do it now” In light of Brittney Griner’s scenario, $4 million worth American rapper says he won’t ever return to RUSSIA

Tony Yayo, Brittney Griner

Brittney Griner is still in captivity in Russia, where she is sentenced to nine years in a horrendous prison colony, and the American government is still attempting to extradite her. In spite of the Griner scenario, rapper Tony Yayo declares in an interview that he will never travel to Russia again.

The basketball community immediately came to a complete halt when Brittney Griner made her court appearance from the Russian prison for her trial. When Russian authorities discovered vape cartridges with cannabis oil in her luggage—which is illegal there—they detained her and charged her with narcotics smuggling in February earlier this year.

Despite the fact that Griner had no prior legal experience, the Russian court still sentenced her to nine years in prison.

A Russian court dismissed her appeal last month, which resulted in her being given a nine-year term for narcotics possession. Tony Yayo, a rapper, recently expressed his viewpoint on the unfair sentencing from Russia.

Tony questioned Vlad about his perspective on the Brittney Griner incident as a Russian during a recent interview with VladTV. Given that she was merely found with a vape pen, Tony told him that the situation is absurd. He asked: “With the pen to do 9 years?” where Vlad replies: “It’s insane.”

In a later part of the interview, Yayo states: “I’m quite sure I smoked in Russia… I wouldn’t do it now and I wouldn’t wanna go there.” He then added: ” I could just imagine how cold it is in Russia, what they having to do there… Free that girl man.” Her situation is really worse as her defense attorneys disclosed that neither they nor the US Embassy is aware of Griner’s current location because no one is aware of her whereabouts or what she is doing.

The current perilous state of Brittney Griner and what is to be done?

Brittney Griner has not yet made it back to her home country after being detained by Russian officials at Sheremetyevo International Airport in February. The seven-time all-star and two-time WNBA defensive player of the year was stopped by Russian Customs while in possession of vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. After being found guilty of petty narcotics offenses in Russia, Griner was given a nine-year imprisonment in August.

On August 15, Griner’s legal team filed an appeal against her nine-year sentence, but it was again denied in October. They still believe that her punishment was excessive even though she could have received a 10-year prison sentence. The defense attorneys argued that other people convicted in comparable situations across Russia received fewer sentences, and some even received parole.

On August 11, representatives of the Russian government disclosed that although talks with the American administration about a prisoner swap had already begun, there had been no further progress. The 32-year-old Phoenix Mercury player Griner has two Olympic gold medals to her name. Since 2014, she has competed in WNBA off-season events while representing UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia.

The meeting between the CIA Director and Russian intelligence last week marked the highest-ranking face-to-face interaction between American and Russian officials since before Russian President Vladimir Putin began the invasion in February. There is clearly growing pressure on the US government and the Joe Biden administration to take action and prevent the issue from getting worse, even though it is unclear how the meeting affected the negotiations to release Griner back.

The U.S. Department of State immediately dismissed a potentially encouraging Russian announcement on talks to return Brittney Griner home on Friday. According to a State Department spokesperson, Russia has not yet taken negotiations seriously since they are too busy undermining democracy to do so, which is what appears to have led to the breakdown of talks between the US and Russia.
