A name which has been trending all over the league for a rather unusual reason is Temetrius ‘Ja’ Morant. Morant was once considered to be the legendary Derrick Rose’s successor and has now fallen off in almost everyone’s eyes after a series of controversies. Morant was seen flashing a gun at a nightclub in Colorado on his Instagram live, and images of a stripper being all over Morant went viral on social media. The Colorado police investigated the matter thoroughly but dropped all charges against him due to a lack of evidence.
However, NBA and the Grizzlies suspended Morant initially for 2 games, and have extended the suspension for an Indefinite period of time. With uncertainty prevailing regarding his return, Morant has apparently flown to Florida for counseling. “Ja Morant has been receiving counseling in Florida for the last week… It’s unclear when he’s gonna be back… The Grizzlies’ expectation is that he’s gonna be out still for the foreseeable future,” said Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Prior to the incident, Morant averaged 27 points per game on 46.2 percent efficiency in 53 games. The Grizzlies have not been affected much by his absence and have won 3 out of 5 games without him. The Grizzlies are placed third in the Wild Western Conference with a record of 41-26.
Gilbert Arenas comes out in support of Ja Morant, calls him a philanthropist
Ja Morant has been the subject of a lot of criticism from various elements after his strip club controversy. The fans are displeased with the fact that a person(Ja) hailing from a well-to-do family is trying hard to emulate someone from the hood. Analysts like Shannon Sharpe and Skip Bayless have been ruthless in their assessment of the scenario.
Amidst the controversy, it was found that Ja Morant spent about $50000 in tips at the strip club. Using that as the focal point, former Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas took to his Instagram in support of Morant.
Arenas posted a photo of Ja with the stripper and provided an extremely long caption in defense of the 3 times all-star and called Morant a “philanthropist” for donating his tips to the local community which helped struggling women. Arenas was trolled for calling Morant a family man, but the former all-star was unapologetic about his message to Morant.
