“Is this your man?” Isiah Thomas reveals how great of a trash-talker Kareem Abdul Jabbar was
Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Isiah Thomas
Kareem Abdul Jabbar isn’t really respected by the fans around the globe as he should be. He deserves to be in the G.O.A.T conversation but is forgotten by the fans as all the attention is on Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. And, we can’t really blame the fans for it as the modern generation hasn’t really seen the greatness and heroics of Kareem Abdul Jabbar. But still, there are many of his stories out there which can get the crowd hooked up to him again. As he deserves all of that since he brought the Skyhook in to the game and till today leads the league in all-time points scored.
Most of the NBA fans know Kareem Abdul Jabbar as a gentleman who respected and dominated the game at the same time. Many also know he was capable of swinging a strong right when his opponents and rivals crossed the line as the video of him showcasing his boxing skills on the hardwood keeps on resurfacing on the internet again and again. But what many don’t really know about Kareem Abdul Jabbar is that he knew how to talk some good trash and get under the skin of his rivals when required.
Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Gary Payton and Draymond Green are some of the names who are known for that skill. But thanks to Isiah Thomas who revealed how great of a trash-talker Kareem Abdul Jabbar really was. He was talking about the superstar during an NBA 75 segment about him and revealed how during a heated matchup he got torched by the words of the great center but the Bad Boys of Detroit Pistons overcame the Lakers and won the championship in 1989. Maybe the trash-talking was done years before that or may be after. The perfect period wasn’t revealed by Zeke and we’ll have to live without it.
Isiah Thomas on Kareem Abdul Jabbar trash-talking him
Isiah Thomas talking about Kareem Abdul Jabbar quoted: “I came in during the prime of [Kareem’s] career. And, you know, when you watch him on television, you think they’re good, but then when you actually get a chance to play against him, not only do you realize how good he is but how smart he is. I remember I was the designated double-teamer, so we double-teamed Kareem every time he touched the basketball. And Magic threw it in, my job was to come back and double-team. So I come back, and I double-team. My hands are up, I’m like [mimics a defensive stance], you know? And I remember [Kareem] looks me dead in my eyes and goes, ‘Hey, is this your man?’ And he drops it right over my head, Magic lays it up. I mean, he was so smart and just a consummate professional.”
So now we know how great Kareem Abdul Jabbar is and even he had the skills we praise many stars today for. So we should really give him the respect he deserves and bring his name up during the G.O.A.T conversations as there’s no doubt about the fact that if he was in the league today he’ll absolutely smoke anyone and everyone. As a player like him was unguardable back in the days and will still live to the same calibre.
