Whenever a short athletic guard who can dunk the basketball enters the league, he immediately draws comparisons to former MVP Derrick Rose. Similar comparisons are made for Ja Morant, who has been the closest player to imitate the success Rose has had in his career. While he hasn’t won an MVP, he has become the face of the Memphis Grizzlies and has led them to playoff success early in his career.

Recently, in an appearance on the Run Your Race podcast, Danny Green of the Philadelphia 76ers talked about how the comparisons made between Rose and Morant by people are absolutely absurd given the fact that there was no one like Rose during his prime.“People like to compare Ja [Morant] and [Derrick] Rose or like certain people to D Rose, but there is nobody like that motherf*cker right there when he was in his prime,” Green said.

Derrick Rose was (and still is) the youngest player ever to win the MVP title. He won the award competing alongside players like LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. Green has a point saying that because Morant hasn’t established himself as a top 5 player in the league like Rose was before the knee injuries caught up to him, which caused his performance to drop significantly.

Derrick Rose is not in Memphis to babysit Ja Morant, he is there to push him

The Memphis Grizzlies were very active during the offseason; they signed Marcus Smart and Derrick Rose to fill the void of Ja Morant, who will be facing a 25-game suspension, and Tyus Jones, who they traded away to get Smart. Rose was seen as a player who could mentor Morant and help him reach his full potential and not allow his off-court issues to affect his career.

Rose has made it quite clear that he is not there to babysit Morant, but he is there to push the team towards success and allow them to win more games and even a championship. “I just told him I’m not here to babysit you. I’m not here to follow you around. I’m not here to cheerlead, I’m here to push you,” Rose said.
