The entire NBA fraternity is on its toes after the recent, recurring controversy with Ja Morant. After the young Memphis Grizzlies guard was seen flashing a gun on Instagram Live, fans, critics and media persons have not stopped conversations about it. This is the second time in three months Morant has repeated the incident. The first happened in March when Morant was at a nightclub in Denver in an intoxicated state.
After the Denver incident, Ja Morant was suspended for eight games by the NBA after an investigation conducted by the league. However, the penalty was clearly not enough for the guard to mend his ways. After the recent video surfaced and went viral, many have been harsh with their comments. While some demand a 20-game suspension, some are also asking the league to kick him out. The most recent response to the incident was made by former NBA player Stephen Jackson.
Stephen Jackson spoke on the IAMATHLETE podcast and said, “It’s not what you do. It’s what you do after and it’s not the same.” He also spoke about how Ja Morant was irresponsible for repeating the incident. “All the people like me that was taking up for him that said it’s a mistake. He’s a young kid. We can’t go to bat for him this time. This was dumbest thing he could’ve done. This is a moron move. His parents should be embarrassed,” he said.
“You gotta put everything in his lap and let him deal with it. He’s gotta deal with everything that comes out of it because he’s done the same dumb thing again that he act like he went and got help for.” Jackson also grilled Morant for his ineffective counseling session, saying that was a publicity stunt. “He didn’t talk to nobody and get help that fast. It was no way. That was a publicity stunt. This is all on him. Nobody’s gonna defend him. I definitely won’t stand up and defend him coz that was the dumbest thing you could’ve done.”

What could Ja Morant be penalized with?
Although no sentence has been announced yet, there are many speculations about what Morant’s penalty could be. As of now, the NBA spokesperson, Mike Bass, has issued a small statement. “We are aware of the social media post involving Ja Morant and are in the process of gathering more information,” he said. The Memphis Grizzlies also issued a statement amid the controversy. “We are aware of the social media video involving Ja Morant. He is suspended from all activities pending League review. We have no further comment at this time,” said the Grizzlies‘ management in the media release statement.
Ja Moran had earlier mentioned that he had problems with his mental health. Namely, with anxiety. However, the guard reportedly had a short counseling session during his eight-game suspension earlier during the season. On the other hand, many are calling it an excuse and have refused to show Morant any sympathy. As the league is on its investigation regarding the issue, fans, and critics are calling for a strong punishment. The final verdict by the NBA remains to be made.
