Ja Morant joins LeBron James and Kobe Bryant after massive 47-point explosion in Game 2 vs Warriors

Ja Morant put on a show against the Warriors, in Game 2 of the series

Ja Morant could not convert a last minute layup against the Golden State Warriors in Game 1, to bring glory to Memphis Grizzlies. On Game 2, he made sure it was game-set-match for Memphis as they won 106-101, tying the series at 1-1 as we head over to the Bay for Game 3. Ja Morant, one of the league’s most compelling young talents, had a mesmerizing game as he dropped a career-high 47 points, joining LeBron James and Kobe Bryant as the only players in history to record multiple 45-point playoff games before the age of 23

In a game of high stakes and no margins for error whatsoever, Ja Morant was in the ‘Zone’. It was an enthralling encounter between two fierce teams that featured the ejection of Grizzlies defensive ace Dillon Brooks and stitches to Warriors star Draymond Green’s face who was not happy about it and showed his discontent to the home fans . Memphis avenged a 117-116 home loss in Game 1 as the best-of-seven travels to San Francisco for Games 3 and 4 on Saturday and Monday.

Ja Morant had 47 points on the night, including 5-for-12 on three-pointers, helping the Grizzlies outscore Golden State, 42-21, from beyond the arc. He also dished out 8 assists and 8 rebounds. While Ziaire Williams chipped in with 14 points, Jaren Jackson Jr. contributed 12 points before fouling out, and Brandon Clarke with 10.

What makes Morant’s frantic game even more emphatic was the fact that he scored the last 15 points of the Grizzlies, within 4 minutes and 33 seconds! To add to that, Morant got inadvertently punched in the left eye near the end of the 4th quarter. Even as the clock ticked away, he gestured a couple of times to the Grizzlies’ bench that he could not see. This would give rise to what will probably known like Michael Jordan’s ‘flu’ in the 1996 Finals or LeBron James cramp in San Antonio when the air conditioning was wrecked in 2014, Tuesday night in Memphis was Ja Morant’s “eye test” game.

Morant’s late flurry began after Stephen Curry laced a three-pointer that gave third-seeded Golden State a 95-91 lead with 4:33 to go. Morant stood up to heat with a step-back triple and swirling layups, joining the elite company of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James as the only players in NBA with multiple 45 point games in the playoffs. Adding to his spectacular 47 point performance against Utah Jazz in May 2021.

Morant brought it home for the Grizzlies, with 18 fourth-quarter points. He was fired up, ultra aggressive, getting up 31 shots, and 12 of those were from beyond the arc. The Warriors sagged way off him at the top, and he walked into 3s all night, making five of them. Imagine Morant starts hitting those shot on a regular basis, which, with that kind of space isn’t out of the question, he’s going to be officially impossible to defend. He might already be. Looks like now Morant can pull off some of his Michael Jackson moves from Game 1 to celebrate !
