The NBA said that it is looking into a video that surfaced on Instagram Live over the weekend that showed Grizzlies star Ja Morant brandishing a firearm. The incident came to light less than two months after he was suspended for a similar offense for showing off a gun in a strip club under the influence of alcohol.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was “shocked” by the video, which came from the account of Morant’s best friend, Davonte Pack. “I was shocked when I saw this weekend that video,” Silver told ESPN’s Malika Andrews from the NBA’s Draft lottery Tuesday. “We’re in the process of investigating it, and we’ll figure out exactly what happened to the best we can. The video is a bit grainy and all that, but I’m assuming the worst.”
Silver told Andrews that he had a “serious conversation” with Morant after his first suspension and warned him about the consequences of his actions. He said he hopes Morant will learn from his mistakes and grow as a person and a player.
“The consequences there – an eight-game suspension – was pretty serious and something that he, at least to me… [Morant] could’ve injured, maimed, killed himself, someone else with an act like that – and also the acknowledgment that he’s a star. He has an incredibly huge following, and [we discussed] my concern,” Silver said.
Ja Morant benched by the Grizzlies until further notice
The Grizzlies took swift action and benched Morant from all team activities until further notice. In the video, Morant can be seen smiling and pointing what appears to be a gun at the camera while listening to NBA YoungBoy’s latest album with his best friend.
Davonte Pack has been a source of trouble for Morant in the past, as he was also with him when Morant waved a gun while drunk at a club during an Instagram Live back in March. That incident resulted in an eight-game suspension without pay for Morant.
The Grizzlies said in a statement that they were “extremely disappointed” by Morant’s actions and that they would not tolerate such behavior from any of their players. Morant has not commented publicly on the video or his benching. He averaged impressive 26.2 points and 8.1 assists per game this season with the Grizzlies, leading them to second seed with 51-31 on the league table. He also missed out on the All-NBA selection, costing him quite a bit of money.
