Tupac Shakur was one of the most influential rappers of our times. His style, his lyrics, and the way he presented himself all contributed to his aura. He was admired and loved by many people. Those who knew him and those who didn’t both found him very likable. Tupac Shakur had close friendships with Mike Tyson and Jada Pinkett Smith, to name a few.

Shakur, however, had problems of his own. He was jailed in 1995 on sexual abuse charges. Jada Pinkett Smith was a very close friend of Shakur during that time. In a podcast with former NBA player Matt Barnes, Smith revealed Shakur asked her to get married while he was imprisoned. Smith denied his request, but she added that the two shared a very special bond. Smith said, “I talk about this in the book when I go to see him in Rikers. That was one of the most painful parts. Seeing him there, the condition that he was in and having to leave him there. He was in bad shape. When he asked me to get married, he was at Rikers.”

Smith delved into the bond she and Shakur shared, calling it a very close one. She said that Shakur needed a rock at the time, somebody he could count on for support. Despite rejecting his approach, Smith remained friendly with him until his tragic death.

In the end, Smith and Shakur did not end up getting married. Smith said while she felt they were soulmates, they had no chemistry between them. Unfortunately for her, Shakur was assassinated a year later, in 1996. Smith said that she lost a very good friend that day.

In her recently released book, she detailed how Shakur was her soulmate, not Will Smith. The statement has led to a rise in sympathy for Will Smith, who was publicly condemned after his infamous slap at the Oscars.

It remains to be seen what the couple choose to do now. Recent reports suggest that the two were separated for seven years before the Oscar incident but still appeared together publicly. Will Smith has not released his side of the story yet, and all fans can do is wait until he does.
