“Won’t be able to walk out of the arena” Jalen Duren destroys his opponents’ rim by dunking on Chuma Okeke’s head in first game
Jalen Duren and Jaden Ivey
When the Detroit Pistons picked Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren in last year’s draft lottery, it seemed like the Pistons were the most exciting team Motown had seen in a long time. They played up to that hype on opening night, defeating the similarly young and energetic Orlando Magic 113-109. It’s the first time they have finished above .500 since 2019.
Ivey scored 19 points, displaying his fast first step and hitting a pair of three-pointers. Jalen Duren had 14 points and 11 rebounds, making him the youngest Piston to ever earn a double-double. He went on to drop a monstrous dunk over Chuma Okeke of the Orlando Magic and needless to say the crowd present in the arena couldn’t believe what they saw.
The Pistons were behind by 15 points in the first quarter when Orlando embarked on a 19-0 run. The starters were not playing tight and got sloppy with the ball which allowed Orlando’s length to influence the game on both ends. The game then turned when Duren entered the discussion. His defense energized a sluggish squad, and his inside presence freed up space for Detroit’s guards to work.
Jalen Duren helps Detroit Pistons down Orlando Magic in the season opener
The Pistons got off to a shaky start, shooting 0-8 in the opening quarter, allowing the Magic to grab a fifteen-point advantage. But the Pistons rallied back to reclaim the lead and held off Magic rallies to win this game. Both Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren made impressive debuts, with Ivey scoring 19 points, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals and Duren being the youngest Piston to record a double-double with fourteen points and eleven rebounds
Duren made his presence known very early in the second quarter with a vicious poster slam that trimmed the Pistons’ deficit to seven. He also had three good blocks, which helped the Pistons to get into transition. Ivey demonstrated that he may be the most athletic player on the court by blowing past his opponents to finish. Even when he missed, it was evident that Ivey can easily get by anyone.
