“Are you the reigning DPOY? My *SS” James Harden sends Marcus Smart out of the TD Garden after career-worst flop in season opener

“Are you the reigning DPOY? My *SS” James Harden sends Marcus Smart out of the TD Garden after career-worst flop in season opener

James Harden, Marcus Smart

James Harden, the star player for the Philadelphia 76ers, put on a spectacular performance in the team’s season-opening game against the Boston Celtics. He made headlines for a crossover that sent Marcus Smart flying across the court, which was nothing but a flop.

On Tuesday night, the TD Garden hosted the opening match of the 2022–2023 NBA season between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics. This season, the 76ers are viewed as possible championship contenders. Philadelphia is also well-served by some remarkable talent on their roster, led by the James Harden and Joel Embiid pairing. The Celtics are also the favorites after coming in second place last year. They rode a second-half surge to the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference and subsequently a conference title. Marcus Smart became the first guard to win Defensive Player of the Year honors since 1996 as a result. But todays main highlight was Smart’s flop against an Harden crossover where he bricked the shot.

Was this a preview of the Eastern Conference Finals matchup between Celtics and the Sixers?

The Boston Celtics defeated the Philadelphia 76ers to kick off the 2022–23 NBA season. The Celtics were led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, who both scored 35 points. At the end of the third quarter, Boston outscored Philadelphia 35-35 to break the tie and go on to win the game. The expected contenders dominated the way for Boston. The team’s top two scorers were Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, with Tatum also contributing 12 rebounds and four assists. That pair appeared to play a game of domination with Philadelphia’s defenses. Marcus Smart, the Celtics’ current defensive player of the year, contributed 14 points and seven assists as well.

With 35 points, seven assists, and eight rebounds to lead Philadelphia, James Harden was undoubtedly the Sixers’ most promising performer of the game. Rising sensation Tyrese Maxey added 21 points of his own, including nine in the fourth quarter, alongside Joel Embiid’s 26 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists. Embiid was the MVP runner-up from the previous season. The output of those trio was insufficient to help the Sixers win their season opener. The game’s final stats for Embiid appear to be rather impressive, but they may be deceiving because Embiid’s effort was far from spectacular. Simply put, when it came to winning, the Celtics were simply too much for the Sixers to handle.

Twitter reacts to James Harden crossing up Marcus Smart and then shooting a brick

James Harden is renowned for his lethal stepback and crossover combinations. The 76ers veteran manipulated Marcus Smart, the current DPOY, in this play. After a terrific cutback crossover, Smart slipped away, giving Harden enough of room to shoot a three-pointer. Harden decided to shimmy a little before shooting to add some flare to the play.  Harden, to the delight of the crowd, hammered the attempt off the rim’s side. What might have been a historically disrespectful play led to Harden being hailed as Shaqtin’ A Fool’s top highlight. This is how the twitter world reacted to this unwavering play:

Even one the greatest of all-time three-point shooters, Harden, can miss a shot just as poorly as anybody can and t here is such a thing as being excessively open, in fact. At the beginning of this game, Harden mostly looked fantastic. He expertly managed the game’s tempo while displaying indications of playing like his former self. Both Philadelphia and the Celtics had championship ambitions after finishing two victories short of winning the championship the previous season. Before both teams acquire a rhythm, it will merely take some time. If nothing else, Smart’s flopping appears to be in peak condition.
