Adding to the frustration, Harden had taken a substantial $15 million pay cut to help the team acquire additional pieces for a championship push, hoping for a max extension. However, the Sixers’ General Manager, Daryl Morey, shattered those hopes, stating they didn’t envision a future with the former MVP.
Additionally, Harden chose to exercise his player option, positioning himself for a trade. He ensured that Philadelphia wouldn’t be left empty-handed after they had relinquished numerous assets to acquire him in 2022. While he initially expressed a preference for the Los Angeles Clippers, the Sixers couldn’t secure a significant trade.
