The tensions between James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers’ front office are escalating with each passing day. It all started when Harden demanded a trade from the 76ers after he had opted into his player option. He asked GM Daryl Morey to facilitate a trade to the Los Angeles Clippers. However, the Sixers eventually halted trade discussions with the Clippers due to the lack of significant offers. They announced their intention to retain Harden for the upcoming season.
This situation has prompted Harden to publicly express his discontent. According to him, he had been promised a max contract before signing his two-year deal with the Sixers, contingent on taking a $15 million pay cut. Regrettably, the promised contract was not extended to him. Additionally, he had been assured that he could be traded to a team of his choosing if he exercised his player option. Unfortunately, this commitment also went unfulfilled. Consequently, Harden has escalated matters by openly labeling GM Morey a liar during a boot camp he organized in China. He further declared his refusal to be associated with any organization involving Morey.
According to reports, this could signify the start of Harden’s disruptive actions. In a report by ESPN’s senior writer Ramona Shelburne, it is stated that Harden plans to intensify efforts to create discomfort within the 76ers organization. His objective is to compel the Sixers to trade him, potentially leading to a situation similar to the one involving Ben Simmons.
Ramona wrote, “This is only the beginning. This is just the beginning of what James Harden is going to do to make life very uncomfortable for the Philadelphia 76ers going into training camp.’”
James Harden plans to not take part in 76ers training camp
The relationship between Daryl Morey and James Harden has fractured following the Harden trade debacle. Harden and Morey had been together in Houston since 2012. One reason Harden left the Houston Rockets was due to Morey’s departure from the front office. Harden believed that without Morey, the front office wouldn’t be capable of building a contender around him. The current state of their relationship is notably different from its past form.
Now, with Morey reneging on his promises — from pledging a max contract in exchange for Harden accepting a pay cut, to urging him to opt into his player option for a potential trade, and subsequently not executing the trade as per Harden’s account — the relationship has deteriorated to the extent that Harden intends to abstain from rejoining the Sixers and refuses to participate in their training camp or play for them at all.
According to a report by Sam Amick of The Athletic, irrespective of any signals the 76ers might convey regarding trade discussions, Harden is resolute in his decision not to play for the 76ers. He has no intention of partaking in their training camp. Amick wrote, “No matter what signals the Sixers might send when it comes to trade talks, a source close to Harden reiterated that the 10-time All-Star and former MVP no longer wants to play for Philadelphia and has no plans of taking part in training camp.”
