“Got to show up” Jason Kidd calls out Mavericks after stunning defeat against Zion Williamson-less Pelicans

Jason Kidd

Jason Kidd’s Mavericks are shell-shocked at the very least after their recent loss against the New Orleans Pelicans. The Pelicans fielded their b-team against the Mavericks, a line-up that didn’t contain the likes of Zion Williamson, and Brandon Ingram to name a few. Yet they couldn’t overpower them as they lost 111-113 to the Pels despite a stellar performance from Luka Doncic who scored 37 points in the game.

Jason Kidd speaking on the loss said, “You got to show up. You got to go take the win, and no one’s going to give you anything in this league,” Kidd definitely isn’t wrong in saying so as the Pelicans are a young and hungry team. The addition of CJ McCollum has taken NOLA to the next level, while Trey Murphy has been spitting fireballs to start the season, finishing with 22 points on a perfect 8-8 from the field and 4-4 from deep in their impressive win.

With the Mavs still being a one-man show for Luka Doncic. Doncic attempted 30 shots, 13 of which were from beyond the arc, and only two of them were successful. Doncic is an incredible player, no doubt, but if his three-point shot isn’t falling, the Mavericks should be more than willing to go to Spencer Dinwiddie and new addition Christian Wood down the stretch.

Jason Kidd’s Mavericks have a lot to work on after the loss against the Pelicans

Despite missing three key starters, the Mavs fell to the New Orleans Pelicans 113-111 on Tuesday night in New Orleans and this should be a wake-up call for them at the very least. Since drafting Luka Doncic, Dallas has followed a simple formula that has yielded positive results, surround him with shooters with at least one other ball handler, and a rim-running big.

By relying heavily on this formula, Dallas has improved it’s winning percentage in each consecutive season since Doncic was drafted. There’s no denying it works, especially after the Mavericks’ ran to the Western Conference Finals earlier last season.

Teams hope that Doncic exhausts himself by doing everything for three quarters and then watch his teammates struggle to pick up the slack during the fourth quarter. With two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and the Mavericks trailing 111-107, Doncic was double-teamed at the top of the key. The Mavs and Jason Kidd definitely need to look into this aspect if they hope to make it to the finals this season.
