Jayson Tatum had a rough night on Friday, shooting 5-of-21 from the field and scoring just 19 points in the Boston Celtics’ 95-86 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Tatum, who had been a force in the series, couldn’t get anything going against the Sixers’ defense. He missed all 10 of his shots in the first half and wasn’t really effective on the court until the fourth quarter.
But Tatum didn’t let his poor shooting affect his confidence or his leadership. He came alive in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points and hitting four three-pointers to help Boston pull away and force a Game 7.
After the game, Tatum was asked how he maintained his confidence after struggling for most of the night. He said, “I’m humbly, one of the best basketball players in the world. Go through struggles, go through slumps, it’s a long game. Thankful I got some great teammates that held it down.”
“And they all trust me right, keep taking great looks its gonna fall keep impacting the game in other ways, and all that matters is that we won this game, give ourselves another chance to come back home for game 7,” he continued.
Jayson Tatum’s comments spark backlash on Twitter
Tatum’s declaration of being one of the best basketball players in the world did not sit well with some fans on Twitter, who ridiculed him for his arrogance and inconsistency. Others questioned his humility and suggested that he should focus on improving his game instead of bragging.
Here are some of the tweets that mocked Tatum for his comments:
The Celtics and the Sixers will face off in Game 7 on Sunday at TD Garden, with a spot in the Eastern Conference finals on the line. Tatum will have an opportunity to back up his claim as one of the best basketball players in the world or face more backlash from fans and media.
