Jayson Tatum has emerged as one of the biggest stars in the NBA, if not a superstar. Being only 24 years of age, Tatum has made his name in the list of elite players in the league. He is already leading the Boston Celtics’ offense for the past few seasons. In the 2021-22 season, Tatum signed a 25% rookie max extension of five years and $163 million with the Celtics. That is a lot of money, but that was not always the case with Tatum and his family.

In a recent interview with Graham Bensinger on “In Depth with Graham Bensinger” Tatum revealed that, before he was drafted into the league, financially, he and his family struggled a lot. “I was in high school six years ago, so, most of my life, I didn’t have money,” Tatum said. The Celtics star also added that he had no investment or credit card with him. “I didn’t have an investment account, checking account or credit card. So, I know what it’s like to struggle and not have.

The Celtics star reflected back on his old days and said that before coming into the league he wasn’t able to buy enough fuel for his car. “I remember when I first started getting checks. Being not able to fill my cars up. I would call my mom and be like, ‘Mom, how much money is on this debit card?’ She’ll be like, ‘All right, it’s $15.’ Then, I could fill my tank up, so I could get to school and back,” Tatum recalled. Tatum also added that in order to save fuel and money, he didn’t make any stops because the fuel had to last a week, “Don’t make any stops, because that tank had to last me the whole week.”

Jayson Tatum says his mom doesn’t let him spend his NBA earnings from Boston Celtics

Tatum also told Bensinger that his mom and his manager both manage his finances and perhaps she is very strict with the money. Tatum told Graham that before he was drafted he had to make a deal with his mom. “We had a deal before I got drafted that I couldn’t spend the money I make from the Celtics, that I have to live off my endorsements,” Tatum told Bensinger. “Her and my accountant agreed.” So he still doesn’t spend the money he earns from the Celtics.

As per the deal, Tatum can only spend money that he earns from endorsements. That too fills a lot of money into Jayson’s account. The All-Star and the MVP front-runner has endorsements with Jordan Brand, Subway, and Gatorade, among many others. He also told a hilarious story, when his mom called to bash him about spending $12k in one night when he was on a vacation with friends. Tatum also revealed that his first Jordan signature shoe will be released in March of next year.
