One more ascent. Just 1,364 points more. The mountain’s apex is now within sight. That seemingly unattainable figure of 38,387 career points now looks to be within reach. It’s no longer a question of if LeBron James will overtake Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. It’s simply a matter of time before he does it.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been the NBA’s all-time leading scorer since 1984. He was one of the most dominant big men in history, holding a record that many thought would be difficult to break. In 1989, Abdul-Jabbar retired with 38,387 points.  LeBron James scored 38 points in a Lakers defeat to the Wizards on March 19 in Washington, passing Karl Malone for second place on the all-time scoring record. Malone has been No. 2 for 21 years, since passing Wilt Chamberlain on December 5, 2000.

Despite the fact that health will be a major concern, it should only be a matter of time until James beats Abdul-Jabbar. On the podcast “The Crossover,” Lakers owner Jeanie Buss discussed how crucial it will be for James to break the record in a Lakers uniform:

“Every individual is different, but with LeBron we have a line of communication between the two of us, and he knows that he can reach me anytime and vice versa. I think he feels appreciated. I appreciated that he signed an extension to stay here and continue to lead the Laker team. He’s a fantastic leader both on and off the court, and, you know, I feel like we’re blessed to have him as a Laker. I want to see him retire as a Laker. We have something that is coming up, which is he will probably become the all-time leading scorer in the history of the NBA, which would break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record, which I’ll never forget.

“When he did that (in 1984) and said this is a record that will never be broken, and here we are (with) somebody who is going to break it in a Laker uniform, and that has a lot of meaning to the organization and to me personally.”

Can LeBron James lead Lakers to another title glory?

The Los Angeles Lakers had a very forgettable campaign last season with winning 33 games and losing 49, the lakers were only a shadow of their 2019-20 season self, they couldn’t make it to the playoffs after a loss to the Phoenix Suns in their final game. The franchise saw an injury laden squad with Lebron James and Anthony Davis staying injured for most part of their campaign and Russell Westbrook the wonderchild of the team couldn’t do any magic either to save the ship from sinking

The Lakers will attempt to rebound after a poor 2021-22 season in which they went 33-49 and finished 11th in the Western Conference. To return to the playoffs, the Lakers will need James and Anthony Davis to stay healthy. The competitive level in the Western Conference has increased significantly throughout the offseason, making it even more difficult for James and the Lakers.
