In light of recent events, the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, Jeanie Buss, made an appearance on a podcast with Graham Bensinger. Often known as one of the most powerful women owners in the NBA, Buss opened up about her experiences as a young NBA owner in the league, which involved se*ism at the workplace and bullying.
One of the most distressing incidents she spoke about was her se*ual harassment at an NBA conference. The Los Angeles Lakers owner talked about how she was resilient and determined to make a break in a male-dominated industry like the NBA and how she stood her ground and showed strength. Jeanie Buss shed light on the bullying and intimidation she faced as a young NBA owner.
To that, she talks about her groping incident at an NBA conference. As Buss explained, she was going for a break after the conference and was in line for a buffet to get refreshments when she was groped by an NBA owner. It was very distressing for Buss when she faced that.
Moreover, she explained how she turned back and gave the owner, in her words, a dirty look. With means of intimidation, she stood her ground and stayed in the same room in the conference to show her strength. Buss, in a statement, narrated the story.
As we were waiting, taking a break from the meeting and everybody’s in line for the buffet for lunch during the lunch break, somebody grabs my ass. I turn around and I was so shocked.Jeanie Buss
The Lakers’ owner said that at that moment she realized that she may not be able to get the respect of the existing ownerships of the time when she entered the league as a young owner. However, Jeanie Buss said that she could help the ones who came after these groups, who are new in the room. She sheds light on the new person to whom she lent a helping hand, Mark Cuban.
Cuban entered the NBA as a young owner when he bought the Dallas Mavericks for 250 million dollars at the time. Buss recalls reaching out to Mark and asking him if she could help in any way. She was in strong support of Mark Cuban in his initial days as a young NBA owner for the Mavericks.
Jeanie Buss’ timeline as the owner of the LA Lakers
The owner of one of the biggest basketball franchises in the NBA with a history of procuring and attracting top talents and recruits is Jeanie Buss. The LA Lakers were initially owned by Jeanie’s father Jerry Buss. But after Jerry’s passing in 2013, Jeanie took up the reins and led the franchise as the president and executive owner of the Los Angeles Lakers ever since.
But before Jeanie took over sole control of the team in the year 2013, she used to focus on the business side of things. Jeanie’s brother, who also worked with her, was responsible for everything that was basketball-related. From the year 1999 to the year 2013, when Jeanie’s dad passed away, she worked as the vice president of basketball operations for the Lakers.
Jerry’s death resulted in initially naming Jeanie the governor of the franchise, even though all his children had equal stakes in the team. Eventually, Jeanie’s brother Jim Buss left the franchise in the hands of Jeanie to make the important decisions. Buss had a set of notable achievements as the Lakers owner.
She got NBA legend Magic Johnson on board as the Laker’s new president of basketball operations as the governor. As an executive owner, she led the franchise through a lot of highs and lows. One of those is notable in the year 2020 when the Lakers won the NBA championship with legend LeBron James and star Anthony Davis leading the team.
