The NBA has a lot of rules in place to make the game fair for players, both offensively and defensively. However, there have been occasions when players have taken advantage of loopholes. Moreover, many fans also believe that some of these rules make the game slow and unfair, specifically for those who don’t look to dwell into exploiting loopholes for points. Therefore, there are quite a few people who believe that the NBA should make some changes to its rulebook. Quite recently, former coach and analyst Jeff Van Gundy proposed his ideas.
Jeff Van Gundy was on the Richard Deitsch podcast when he gave his views on what changes the league should make. Van Gundy spoke about how he feels eliminating free throws for the last four minutes of the game might be useful. He also proposed the reduction of the halftime. Below is his entire quote:
“Eliminate free throws until the last four minutes. If you get fouled on a shooting foul, you just get the points. You don’t go to the line. And you don’t go to the line for technical free throws. They’re just points. Then I would eliminate halftime. I think halftime is the biggest waste of time. Or I’d reduce it to five minutes so you could go to the bathroom and come back out.”
Twitter reacts to Jeff Van Gundy’s suggestions
After Jeff Van Gundy spoke his mind, he received a lot of reactions from the NBA community. While there are a few who believe his suggestions make sense, many have ridiculed him. Here are a few fan reactions from Twitter:
Although many have mocked him for his ideas, Van Gundy has received some support for them as well. Quite a few fans do agree that the halftime duration is too long and should be reduced. However, it is unlikely that the NBA would make these changes to an already well-constructed and stable system. Regardless we will have to see if any rules are tweaked after the 2023 NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the Denver Nuggets.
