Jimmy Butler had a chance to make history on Monday night. He had a chance to lead the Miami Heat to a miraculous comeback from a 3-1 deficit in the NBA Finals against the Denver Nuggets. But Butler failed to deliver in Game 5.
Butler shot a woeful 5-of-18 from the field and scored only 21 points as the Heat lost 94-89 to the Nuggets, who won their first NBA title in franchise history. Butler was outshined by Nikola Jokic, who had 28 points, 16 rebounds, and four assists and was named Finals MVP. Jokic dominated the paint and the glass, while Butler struggled to find his rhythm and his shot.
Butler had been sensational in the previous four games, averaging 21.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 6.4 assists. Butler had also been vocal about his confidence and his belief that he could lead the Heat to a historic comeback.
He tried to rally the Heat in the second half, scoring eight straight points to give them an 87-86 lead with 2:45 left. But he couldn’t make another basket after that, a three-pointer in the final minutes and caused a turnover in the final seconds that changed that game.

Butler’s performance was so disappointing that NBA Twitter roasted him for his failure. Fans mocked him for his lack of scoring, his poor shot selection, his inability to stop Jokic, and his overconfidence.
Here are some of the reactions from Twitter:
It was a chaotic and sloppy game, but the Nuggets and their faithful fans didn’t care. They had just witnessed history. Denver had finally captured its first NBA championship in more than 50 years of its existence.
Butler’s dream of winning a championship with the Heat ended in a nightmare. He fell short of his goal and his comparison to Jordan. He will have to wait until next season to try again. While the Nuggets enjoy their Larry O’Brien.
