JJ Redick was a guest on Andre Schulz’s podcast, Flagrant, where they talked about his days in college at Duke University. He also shared a heckling episode he had to endure at the hands of opposition fans that also involved a nasty threat aimed at his 12-year-old sister at the time.
Redick narrated the worst episode of the heckling that took place when his college team, the Duke Blue Devils, played against the Maryland Terrapins.
The fans present were so vile when they tried to intimidate Redick that they went as far as threatening to r**e his 12-year-old sister, which even shocked Andrew Schulz.
Probably the worst, not the worst cos I didn’t think it was that bad but the same game that there were signs talking about anally r***** my sister she was 12.JJ Redick said
College sports have one of the most followed fan bases, and it has been the norm for opposition fans to try to intimidate the visiting team with everything they’ve got to give their team an upper hand. While some go as far as shaving heads to intimidate, others resort to threats that have no place.
Luckily for JJ Redick, the fans didn’t go on with their threats as Redick taunted them with important game-winning shots. Throughout his career with the Blue Devils, Redick was a specialist in three-point and free-throw shots, so it is no wonder the level of heckling he received was meant to make him lose his groove.
JJ Redick and Andrew Schulz discuss s*xism
During that same episode of the Flagrant Podcast, Andrew Schulz and JJ Redick discussed LeBron James’ controversial courtside interaction with Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss.
Schulz couldn’t understand why the four-time NBA champion faced backlash on social media for being friendly with her. Furthermore, Redick agreed with Schulz and called it a shame, while Schulz suggested that the backlash might stem from sexism, which Redick found some truth in.
You know what I realized just coming on the show. You guys are here for the right reasons. You’re just here to break down fu**ed-up institutional barriers.JJ Redick said
Schulz initiated the conversation about Luka Doncic’s playful interaction with a female referee during the 2020-21 NBA season, where the Slovenian started a conversation with referee Ashley Moyer-Gleich during the game against the Clippers.
Doncic’s flirtatious remark, “I am fouling in love with you,” was perceived as charming, with the female referee smiling afterward. This was what led to the conversation about sexism.
Redick has seen his star shine more recently, especially after launching his podcast with LeBron James. While social media has a thing for heating the polity and throwing things out of proportion, we have the likes of Redick and Schulz to demystify them.
