JJ Redick discloses the real reason behind his disappointment in Suns’ trio of Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant, and Devin Booker
The Phoenix Suns have created a super team with three stars this season.
JJ Redick explains the reason behind his disappointment of the Suns big three.
Building super teams is not new in the NBA. Super teams refer to when a team signs multiple star players together, with the ultimate goal of winning a championship. One of the NBA’s current super teams is the Phoenix Suns. The big three of the Suns include Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal.
Booker was drafted by the team in 2015. In February 2023, the Suns traded Durant in a deal with the Brooklyn Nets. And finally, in June of the same year, the team signed Beal in a deal with the Washington Wizards. But it wasn’t until December that the trio played together. Despite being a super team, the Suns’ are the sixth seed in the Western Conference.
JJ Redick, a former NBA player and now an analyst, talked about his disappointment towards the Suns’ big three on ESPN’s First Take. Redick explained his disappointment is not centered on the team’s standings. Instead, it is on the players’ injuries. He said,
When they've been on the court together, they've been a damn good basketball team. So, the disappointing part is the injuries. It's not necessarily in the performance of the big three when they've been together.
The analyst further talked about the disadvantages of putting together a super team. One of the main players getting hurt could result in poorly for the team. Considering the Suns are in the Western Conference, which has the most competitive and difficult teams in the league, he said,
This is the problem with building a super team. You are not gonna have the depth to withstand one of your main guys getting hurt.
Suns’ big three may turn out to be a great disappointment
The Suns forming a super team made the fans have high expectations. But after the union of the trio, the players have played just a few games together. As Redick stated on ESPN’s First Take, Durant has missed seven games, Booker with eleven, and Beal with 29 games. Beal was out due to an ankle injury.
At the beginning of the season, after the big three were assembled, the Suns were considered one of the best teams in the Western Conference. The trio has been a good combination, but the number of games with all three present has been too low.
Redick also explained the team’s performance when the trio was part of the starting lineup. According to stats, the Suns starting five, including the three stars, have resulted in them outscoring the opponents with nineteen points. For the team to do better in playoffs, the star trio needs to play together.
