JJ Redick didn’t have an easy window to the league. He was one of the brightest stars during his college days while suiting up for Duke University. But unfortunately, at the same time, he was also the most hated college player. He even has his jersey retired by the Duke Blue Devils for the great career he had there. JJ Redick had a stacked resume during his college years. He bagged many awards and titles while being the best pure shooter in Duke Basketball history.
But all those greats even brought a lot of hate to JJ Redick. And, most of it stayed when he made it to the league. He was drafted as the 11th overall pick by the Orlando Magic in 2006 and wasn’t really welcomed by his teammates because of his overachiever status. Recently, on his podcast, “The Old Man and The Three.” Redick reacted to LeBron James’ rookie year.
The former NBA star gave King James his flowers for having a successful year even though his teammates were jealous of him and has some pure hate against him. Later, JJ Redick even went on to relate with LeBron James. As he too had a similar experience during his rookie year.
JJ talking about his rookie year quoted: “I think about my rookie year coming in as a Duke Kid. A co**y someone would call me abrasive, overconfident maybe. Who had won National Player of The Year twice. And, I felt a level of hatred. I wouldn’t say jealousy but it was a different time in the NBA it really was. It wasn’t until my second or third year when Richard Lewis came in that I felt like I had some OG vets. That rookie year I felt so alone… These guys really didn’t like me.”
Further, JJ Redick addressed LeBron James as one of the Top 3 players in the last 20 years. As King didn’t just handle his team but also went on to live up to the expectations of the media and fans. He also discussed how the vet’s behavior is changed now in the league.

JJ Redick was bullied by his teammates during his rookie year

That was a really different time in the league. Every rookie has their duties and were controlled by the vets on the team. And, bullying wasn’t rare as that was just part of a cycle. JJ Redick though has to sit under a cold shower for an hour after getting late to the practice. It happened during his rookie year when his teammates were Dwight Howard, Grant Hill, Jameer Nelson, and Hedo Turkoglu.
JJ Redick was asked to apologize to the team after the practice for being late. He even agreed to do so. And, as soon as he sat down being fully dressed to apologize to the team, he was clowned by his teammates. Reflecting upon the old good time, Redick on his podcast said: “And as soon as I sat in the chair, like three guys grabbed me, and they used duct tape, and they duct-taped me to the chair. And then they stuck me in the shower. And the water was running. It was super cold. They left it cold. And they sat me in front of the cold water in the shower for like an hour.”
Nobody even came to his rescue and they just abandoned him there. But fortunately, the equipment manager found him an hour later and he was rescued. JJ even revealed that the vets had him carry big bags of condoms on the road.
