“He could replicate Jerry West from 1969” JJ Redick says Stephen Curry could still clinch his first NBA Finals MVP even if Warriors fall against Celtics
JJ Redick Guarantees Stephen Curry as Finals MVP Award winner
JJ Redick lauds Stephen Curry and his performances in the 2022 NBA Finals. HE also believes that the Warriors’ leader is certain to win Finals MVP Award, even if they lose against Boston
Golden State Warriors are riding high on their star player’s performances. Stephen Curry happens to be the sole consistent performer against Boston Celtics and his game-4 productions just sent him even higher standards than before. There’s still a ton of basketball left to be played in the 2022 NBA Finals. Both teams are locked 2-2 in the seven-game series and the Warriors though hold a home-court advantage, it matters less in current situations. A completely wide-open series has just one common thing in it, that’s Stephen Curry offensive performances. He has been the best player by far between both the teams and JJ Redick points out the same thing while making his Finals MVP Case.
On the “Get Up” show, JJ Redick joins Vince Carter and Amare Stoudemire where he gave his views on the Finals MVP Debate. Pointing out exceptional performances from the 3-point king, Redick is confident about him winning the title irrespective of the outcome of the series. Could he be so far ahead that he deserves the Finals MVP award regardless of who wins?
Stephen Curry and Jerry West carrying their teams in the NBA Finals
The Golden State Warriors could very well be on course to win their fourth NBA title in the last eight seasons. Both teams are just 2 games away from the trophy and having vast experience in their ranks the Warriors do hold some upper hand in the close game. Stephen Curry carried a huge offensive load for the team with some noticeable help from his teammates. But even in the losses, where most of the Golden State players struggled on both ends of the Floor, Steph did his best to keep the team in contention.

Answering the Curry’s MVP credentials, NBA Star JJ Redick said, “You have to go back to 1969, the very first year NBA Finals had MVP from a losing side. That was Jerry West. History says the answer in No to this question, but is he the MVP so far – absolutely. Even if the Celtics win, he has outplayed everyone in the series by far.”
So, even if the Boston Celtics do end up winning, it’s likely that one of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, or even Marcus Smart makes a huge difference in the remaining games. It would make the decision easier for the eleven voter panel deciding on the said award. But looking at the status quo on the stat sheet persists with the Celtics squeaking out two wins against a godlike Steph Curry putting the Warriors on his shoulders – things could get dicey.
Like Redick pointed out, there’s been only one Finals MVP from the losing side in NBA history and that was Jerry West in the 1969 Finals. The series between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics went wire to wire where West’s performance was singled out as the most dominant one.
West averaged 37.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game while shooting 49.0% from the field. Other stars from the Lakers roaster couldn’t even average 20 points in the series. Astonishingly, Lakers MVP Guard averaged more than combining the next 2 highest contributors in the series. 2-time regular-season MVP Stephen Curry also has similar stat lines for the team.
So for Stephen Curry to pull off a losing Finals MVP coronation, he has to set himself apart to the same extent that West did during the 1969 Finals series. Till Game 4 he’s done just that. Steph Curry is averaging an eye-popping 34.3 points and 6.3 assists per game. It is also more than 12 points more than that of opponents to scorers and MVP Candidates, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
As for Steph, winning NBA Title would be the priority and he will be coming at the Celtics’ defense strongly for the 1st lead in the series. Winning game 6 would seal the deal for the Warriors, and Stephen then need not have to break any “Rules” to win his 1st finals MVP trophy.
